Harpsichordify

Saturday, February 23, 2013. The last step on the keyboard was gluing on the sharps, which you can read about here. I continued by making another pass of examining each key and making sure it played freely. If the key didn't travel freely, I made adjustments to the end pins or balance pin holes, like I did previously. Lead wire cut into 3/8" pieces to balance the keys. Balancing the keys one at a time. When done with all the keys, go up and down the keyboard and feel for even touch from key to key. A...

Harpsichordify: June 2012

http://www.harpsichordify.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 15, 2012. You may have noticed things have slowed down a bit on Harpsichordify. I am quickly coming up on several deadlines for other projects with which I am involved, including premiering a new children's opera, a recording project for the release of some new classroom music materials, and an upcoming presentation at an education conference. A big thanks to all my readers and I look forward to getting back to harpsichords as soon as I can! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Harpsichordify: October 2012

http://www.harpsichordify.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Wednesday, October 31, 2012. Put a lid on it, part 1. Makeshift tool for marking the edge of the lid. First I align the lid to the spine of the case, where the hinges will eventually hold it in place, and clamp the lid securely to the case. Pressing the jack to the surface of the case and running around the sides of the case results in an even pencil line around the edges of the lid, about 1/2" from the case sides. Using this marking tool is especially handy for the bentside. Tuesday, October 23, 2012.

Harpsichordify: Making the keyboard work

http://www.harpsichordify.com/2012/02/making-keyboard-work_25.html

Saturday, February 25, 2012. Making the keyboard work. And my last post. Goes into a little detail about the soundboard. The keys that come with the kit are pre-cut, but still need adjustment before they will function properly. This work is called keyboard regulation. The keys come in contact with the key frame in two places— and in the back where the rack pins fit into a slot on the rack, and underneath the center of the keys where they pivot on the balance pins. A few keys are removed for a better look.

Harpsichordify: April 2012

http://www.harpsichordify.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 22, 2012. In previous posts, I assembled the keyframe. And put a protective finish. On the keys. The next step is attaching the sharps (the "black keys" on a piano). Even spacing and alignment of the keys is critical to playing; also because the keyboard is something I'll be looking at a lot. To start, I glue on the highest and lowest sharp and take care that the alignment is correct. A few pictures of the finished keyboard. Friday, April 13, 2012. Closeup of padded nails on the bentside.

Harpsichordify: The Bottom Line, part 2

http://www.harpsichordify.com/2012/10/the-bottom-line-part-2.html

Sunday, October 7, 2012. The Bottom Line, part 2. After double checking the inside of the instrument underneath the soundboard, making sure that the registers and soundboard rose are secure, it's time to prepare the bottom of the case for installation. The bottom of the case is glued, and secured with about 40 cut nails, also called square nails. because of their nearly square cross section. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Put a lid on it, part 1. The Bottom Line, part 3. The Bottom Line, part 2.

Where you can buy small quantities at a time. It makes high-end scents affordable, and when I'm ready to move on, I don't feel bad about the unused remainder. This week I'm wearing Gypsy Water.
