Wednesday, June 3, 2015. I spent Friday in the village of Cantagallo (Singing Rooster! The trip to Cantagallo and back began with a one-hour chalupa boat ride. This is how Colombians travel on the major rivers like our Mississippi. It's like being in a motorboat mini-bus for 20 people - wonderful scenery, wind in your hair, and sun on your face. The day began with a meeting at the local mayor’s office. Many rural women have been impacted in some way by the violence of the 60-year long civil war between r...

Phil's Blog: March 2014

http://www.hartfamnews.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 10, 2014. So they asked me if I wanted to play checkers. It was clear from watching a couple games that I was going to be in serious trouble. I've played a lot of checkers, but not with "queens" that can move and jump unlimited straight-line spaces with possible 90 degree jump turns at the end of each jump. Did you get that? Me either, and that's why I was worried. I actually won two out of three games, mostly on blind luck. Following my Dad's poker-playing advice, I quit while I was ahead.

Saturday, March 30, 2013. The problem with miracles. 8220;You have two choices. You can sell it to me now, or I can buy it from your widow.”. This is the expression that campesinos use to describe the land acquisition strategy of the drug cartels and their corporate and political overlords that began in the early 1980s. Over the years there have been bodies found floating down the rivers. Sometimes the widows sold. And how do you know when your miracle is finished? In the spring of 2011, the community re...

Phil's Blog: June 2012

http://www.hartfamnews.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 20, 2012. Harvesting corn by hand. The moon was 2 days full. I had been sitting behind the house watching it for an hour from the time it peaked over the horizon. Here along the Magdalena River the only lights to be seen were the moon, the stars, and the faint glow of the kerosene candle from the open door. Understand that earlier that day I had offered to help Estéban with his corn harvest and had managed two hours of hand picking field corn in 100 degree heat before I surrendered.

Phil's Blog: January 2009

http://www.hartfamnews.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 11, 2009. On my trip up the Opón River with Stewart I met some really great folks. As many of you know I like hanging around with kids. The above photo was taken by the six-year-old brother of the other two kids in the photo. We were having a little digital camera session. That evening we had supper with another family, and after supper Juan was working on weaving his own net while we visited. It looked absolutely perfect to me, all done free-hand. Encontrando nuestra manera: Despedidas

http://cdcolombia.blogspot.com/2012/06/despedidas.html

Our journey to Colombia. Saturday, June 2, 2012. Abby has probably spent more time in Colombian homes than any of us. Almost daily, she finds someone to play with in our conjunto. For this reason, she has had the most immersion of all of us. She has taken on Colombian quirks, tastes, habits, and mannerisms in addition to language. These are the friends she sought out and developed without my influence. Again, so grateful. I hope that she can stay connected to some of these friends. And if not, I hope...

Our journey to Colombia. Thursday, May 31, 2012. This house is full of emotion. The end of school projects, reports, and presentations. The understanding that each day we might be doing something or seeing someone for the very last time. The arguments over who gets to use what technology, and why their need trumps the need of someone else. Knowing that things will not feel comfortable at "home" for a very long time. Deciding what needs to come with us, and what we need to leave behind. Yes, dear hearts&#...

And we will never be as “in touch” as we promise. Because you can't be in touch when you. Colombia, and her stomach-churning. Mountain roads and dusty beaches. Her regional pride in the arepa. Our journey to Colombia. Saturday, May 28, 2011. For Abby, this was the pay-back for a whole year in uniforms. The girls got to go to school in fancy dress-up, instructed to put flowers in their hair and wear make-up. For Andy, it was a pretty unhappy day. But I still got a little smile). Don't you just wish you could do this? Posted by Jennifer Chappell Deckert. Thursday, May 26, 2011. The families that come to our church for help. Our journey to Colombia. Sunday, July 31, 2011. Summer days with Diana. Our family has always made the choice to be with our children as much as possible in the summer months. This has been difficult at times, financially and logistically, but through a variety of community friends, some flexibility in work schedules, and part-time babysitters, we have made it work. This has been our norm. Posted by Jennifer Chappell Deckert. Two years ago, we were arriving in Colombia after getting to know our soon-to-b...
