Metal Spinning Formers

Patterns are the major cost involved in producing castings. Formers are always circular so this allows ourselves to produce castings by strikling. We make a x-section of the shape and strike it through the sand. The production is cost effective and allows complex shapes to be produced with low tooling costs. The castings are made off a centre spigot so are therefore relatively well balanced.

H DOWNS & Sons Ltd. This is an iron without any British Standards and is a generic term for irons in their natural state as found in the ground. However, the British ore must have had a tendency towards being more heat resistant than imported ores and the name has become synoymous with heat resisting iron. Generally heat resistant iron alloy has 3.3-.35% carbon appearing as graphite with a silicon content 2-2.3%. The opposite can be seen in steel with no carbon where twisting and buckling can be observed.

3 metre long 2.2 tonne. First a hole in the ground made by the half pattern in the next photo. The half pattern is located on the bottom and moulding boxes placed around. The boxes are built up and the sand is pumped into the cavity to make the mould. The top is taken off so the the core can be lowered in to the mould. Finally the casting was poured with 2500 kgs of molten iron. The roll after shot blasting to remove the burnt on sand. The roll being machined.
