Herbie's World: March 2009
http://herbiesworld.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Happenings and Musings from the life of Herbie. Wednesday, March 04, 2009. Four more lives that could have been saved by PLBs. So apparently this is turning into the 406MHz Personal Locator Beacon advocacy blog, but dammit this is important. Since I wrote last week. First, there was the boating accident. Next comes the story of two off-piste snowboarders in the Alps. Seriously people, if you're going to be spending any amount of time away from the comfort of your urban/suburban environment, take one minu...

Herbie's World: October 2010
http://herbiesworld.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
Happenings and Musings from the life of Herbie. Monday, October 11, 2010. Side Project: Swivel Passenger Seat. OK, with this update, I should be more or less "caught up" with documentation vs. the state of reality on the project, at least with respect to things with a significant time investment. As usual, more complete and larger images available on my picasa web album. I will also make reference to some other photos. From the first draft installation. When I scored my donor van, I was pretty excited be...

Herbie's World: February 2009
http://herbiesworld.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Happenings and Musings from the life of Herbie. Thursday, February 26, 2009. One skier dead, one finally rescued after 10 days. According to a couple of stories from CBC News. A Woman has died after she and her husband got lost while skiing and spent 10 days in the B.C. wilderness. Sadly, any one of these missed steps by the skiers might have changed the outcome:. No GPS or Map and Compass. Getting lost is best avoided by "staying found", but even someone who is massively lost could likely have found...

Herbie's World: W00tstock 4.0 Has Come and Gone
http://herbiesworld.blogspot.com/2012/07/w00tstock-40-has-come-and-gone.html
Happenings and Musings from the life of Herbie. Friday, July 13, 2012. W00tstock 4.0 Has Come and Gone. The now-annual San Diego ComiCon variety-show companion, W00tstock. Has come and gone. As with years past, I went from excited anticipation, to reveling in the warmth of being surrounded by "people like me", to a sudden post-holiday like depression. Thanks much to the key players who've make this great experience happen for multiple years now:. Http:/ www.paulandstorm.com/. Posted by Mike Herbst. Maxim...

Herbie's World: June 2009
http://herbiesworld.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Happenings and Musings from the life of Herbie. Sunday, June 07, 2009. Enter Baby's First hack. I cut a mounting plate from some 3/16" aluminum sheet I had in my shop that allowed me to drop down the mounting spindle to allow the mobile to fit over our wide crib rail. The resulting mount and its clearly Autobot-logo outline was purely a bonus. At least my daughter will grow up to fight Decepticons. Posted by Mike Herbst. Links to this post. Herbie's World: March 2015
http://herbiesworld.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Happenings and Musings from the life of Herbie. Monday, March 30, 2015. Hot Action Under the California Sun. Our weekend at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. Starts as a story about being stuck smack in the middle. While probably not the middle of nowhere. CVR is, in fact, in a pretty desolate area almost precisely equidistant from the EFF Home Base. Through those corners, rather than just pirouetting around a collection of apexes at speed. And speaking of, late apex. The open wheel contingent drew the lucky st...

Herbie's World: March 2012
http://herbiesworld.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Happenings and Musings from the life of Herbie. Tuesday, March 27, 2012. SoCal Desert Rendezvous 2012. After a long gap in posts, it's time to catch up on the Astrolander camper project. After the winter Science Olympiad season (whereupon the author loses all momentum on this and all other projects while he coaches high-school kids through some overly-complicated machine or robot construction), I finally got back in the saddle and started prepping the van for the next adventure. Annika was glad to have a...

Herbie's World: September 2009
http://herbiesworld.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Happenings and Musings from the life of Herbie. Saturday, September 05, 2009. And so it begins. Some of you may know that I've been in the research phase of a new vehicle project for quite a while. Using the excellent resources of the Expedition Portal. The base for the transformation is our newly acquired 2003 Chevy Astro. I picked it up this weekend from a dealer in Tucson with just 52700 miles on the clock (under 8800 miles/year! Key features of T.Low's build that I hope to emulate: The GTRV. And a 4x...

Herbie's World: July 2010
http://herbiesworld.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Happenings and Musings from the life of Herbie. Monday, July 26, 2010. My week of Nerd-related activities got extended slightly when a friend let me know that there was a Zombie Walk going on with ComicCon this Saturday. Needless to say, I had to drag the family along. My costume was pretty rudimentary, but there were some really talented and dedicated folks there, including my favorite, the "50's Comic Book Zombie", who was kind enough to pose with me for the picture above. Needed was to be recognized o...
