Getting to our Hideaway. We often change our route to and from the Hideaway, depending on whether we want to get there quickly or take in an interesting city or two. There are daily Ryanair flights from Stansted to Graz, European City of Culture 2004, or the historic city of Klagenfurt. Both cities are traffic-free 45 minute drives from the chalet, which is reached by leaving the A2 Graz to Klaggenfurt motorway at the Bad St Leonard junction.

Rooms with a View. Living on the side of a mountain everything is upside down. We walk into the hall that leads to a large sitting room which has a huge and traditional porcelain stove that keeps the whole chalet woodfire-warm. From the sitting room is a large balcony going along the entire width of the chalet with a wonderful view across Lavental to the Slovenian Alps. Off the sitting room is a kitchen with everything we need.

Chilling in the Sunshine. Is where we stock up at the supermarket before calling into the filling station where the wonderful Badidoes cooks local game food to the highest standard yes, at the filling station! Or drop in to see the Presse twins in the Café-Konditorei Presse. Up in Klippitzorl, a favourite is Barbara’s traditional alpengasthof, The Hochegger. Klippitzorl is a family friendly resort which also has plenty of off-piste opportunities for the more adventurous. Check it out here. It’s a different, less commercial, way to go skiing. The mood is way more relaxed with a Mediterranean feel, Italy and Slovenia having their borders with Carinthia. Within less than an hour’s drive are the resorts of Koralpe, Weinebene, Helbalm and Petzen. Not much further are Bad Kleinkirchheim and Nassfeld. Or the Slovenian resorts of Bled and Kranjska Gora.
