The Hivemind and Me: July 2015
http://www.hivemindandme.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
The blog of an urban beekeeper, in Hull. Hull Bees on eBay. Hull Bees on eBay. Wednesday, 22 July 2015. Or strapping a pallet on top to make a flat platform. But with a centre of gravity so high I'd be concerned about stability. I was going to need to come up with a bespoke barrow specifically for lugging hive boxes. After a little more Google searching I found the 'Famous 500' barrow. From the same family which both position the hives over the wheel to reduce the load. I also found Buster. I had planned...

The blog of an urban beekeeper, in Hull. Hull Bees on eBay. Hull Bees on eBay. Saturday, 21 March 2015. A friend sent me a photo of this sign she saw in the reduced bin at B&Q. St Andrews Quay, Hull. The Hivemind and Me: December 2014
http://www.hivemindandme.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
The blog of an urban beekeeper, in Hull. Hull Bees on eBay. Hull Bees on eBay. Saturday, 27 December 2014. There isn't a lot for beekeepers to do in the winter except maybe drink mead, argue on forums, pad out their blogs with book reviews and clean equipment for next year but one winter activity that needs doing is the mite treatment. As with every other winter whilst there's no brood in the comb the varroa mites will be clinging to the bees which makes them vulnerable. 1KG of sugar dissolved in 630ml o...
The Hivemind and Me: November 2014
http://www.hivemindandme.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
The blog of an urban beekeeper, in Hull. Hull Bees on eBay. Hull Bees on eBay. Saturday, 8 November 2014. Every July the market town of Driffield. Capital of the Wolds no less! Has an agricultural show. Driffield Show. Possibly not the most imaginative at name but it leaves no room ambiguity, has been running a long time. A little Googling tells me the 2014 show was the 139th show and I found an article about a tug of war at the 1859 show. Lip Balm of Eminence. I don't know how many entries there were bu...
The Hivemind and Me: Bees in the Bushes
http://www.hivemindandme.blogspot.com/2015/07/bees-in-bushes.html
The blog of an urban beekeeper, in Hull. Hull Bees on eBay. Hull Bees on eBay. Wednesday, 1 July 2015. Bees in the Bushes. Leave them alone and they'll die off in Autumn. So it was a nice chaneg to get a call from the Council as you know they'll've correctly identified the bees. These bees were in a rose bush over in Bransholme, the other side of the city. Bees Nosanoving on top of the Nuc. Okay so it's probably a cartoon wasp I found on Google Image Search. Works better than a Keep Your Distance sticker.

Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration: Ageing the bridge
http://thisoldzithermandolinbanjo.blogspot.com/2015/02/ageing-bridge.html
Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration. My attempt to return an antique Zither Mandolin Banjo to a playable state. Monday, 9 February 2015. I decided the shiny new metal and maple bridge looked a little incongruent with the rest of the instrument. The wood being maple is low in tannins and so difficult to age. I added some black tea and ground coffee to distilled vinegar and heated it a few times in the microwave to speed up the stewing to make a stain. To control the drying and timing precisely I sat it on a...

Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration: Finished, more or less.
http://thisoldzithermandolinbanjo.blogspot.com/2015/02/finished-more-or-less.html
Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration. My attempt to return an antique Zither Mandolin Banjo to a playable state. Monday, 9 February 2015. Finished, more or less. Well it's taken about a month but the Zither Mandolin Banjo is pretty much finished. I could continue making little changes here and there but my aim was to get it playable and I've done that. It's been an interesting process, learnt a few new things along the way. Just got to figure out how to play it now, how hard can it be? Location: Hull, UK.

Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration: Nailed it?
http://thisoldzithermandolinbanjo.blogspot.com/2015/01/nailed-it.html
Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration. My attempt to return an antique Zither Mandolin Banjo to a playable state. Saturday, 10 January 2015. The nail heads were too small for pliers so in the end I used a pair of concave Bonsai branch cutters to pull them out. Location: Hull, UK. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The chronicle of my attempts to restore a very old, and battered Zither Mandolin Banjo. The lineage of the banjo probably traces back to African instruments like the akonting. Test fitting the head.

Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration: Replacing all the brackets
http://thisoldzithermandolinbanjo.blogspot.com/2015/01/replacing-all-brackets.html
Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration. My attempt to return an antique Zither Mandolin Banjo to a playable state. Thursday, 29 January 2015. Replacing all the brackets. Clamping it in two tiny vices I started making a cut right along the length to give the rod a width of just over 5mm. The first Dremel cutting disc fell apart not very long after starting, the rest managed a few inches before they were too small to continue. The shiny new brackets were cut to size. I used a lot of metal cutting lubricatio...

Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration: Reattaching Neck and Tailpiece
http://thisoldzithermandolinbanjo.blogspot.com/2015/01/reattaching-neck-and-tailpiece.html
Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration. My attempt to return an antique Zither Mandolin Banjo to a playable state. Thursday, 29 January 2015. Reattaching Neck and Tailpiece. Having painted and sealed the pot it was time to reattach the neck, tailpiece and the stud at the back which nobody seems to know the purpose of. Using a right angled torque screwdriver I reattached the neck. Messing about with difficult to reach slotted screws gives you a new appreciation for the crosshead screws. Location: Hull, UK.

Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration. My attempt to return an antique Zither Mandolin Banjo to a playable state. Thursday, 5 February 2015. Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration: Closer Look
http://thisoldzithermandolinbanjo.blogspot.com/2015/01/closer-look.html
Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration. My attempt to return an antique Zither Mandolin Banjo to a playable state. Friday, 9 January 2015. The vellum (round circle of skin) was undamaged. But there was a dent in the edge of the tension ring, I don't think it'd effect the functionality in a big way and I'd guess it was caused buy either someone prising the head out of the pot or by forcing the head into the pot with the two oversized brackets in place. At some point one of the tensioners has been overtightened...

Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration. My attempt to return an antique Zither Mandolin Banjo to a playable state. Sunday, 8 February 2015. I tried putting the leather onto the pot then attaching the tailpiece but it kept falling off. In the end I inverted the tailpiece, sat the leather in it then held the instrument upside down and pressed it to the tailpiece and held it in place whilst tightening the the nuts and bolts. Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration: More Steam
http://thisoldzithermandolinbanjo.blogspot.com/2015/01/more-steam.html
Zither Mandolin Banjo Restoration. My attempt to return an antique Zither Mandolin Banjo to a playable state. Saturday, 10 January 2015. When tension was released it would straighten out again. The wood glue I'll be using should handle a joint under tension but the less tension the better. I decided to put it back into my steamer again. This time with the ratchet strap attached, soften the wood with steam then let it cool held in shape by the strap. Location: Hull, UK. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

The Hivemind and Me
The blog of an urban beekeeper, in Hull. Friday, 14 August 2015. Loves is in the air. On Sunday the bees were making the most of the weather. The landing boards were busy with workers returning hopefully with honey sacs full of nectar or laden pollen baskets. They'll probably wind up as sex murder victims. Location: Kingston upon Hull, UK. Wednesday, 22 July 2015. Or strapping a pallet on top to make a flat platform. At that point I tested it with a brood box and found just by luck that a box at the back...
