Friday, August 28, 2009. HLATC 1990.4.53. A few interesting batik printing tools have come out of storage for packing this past week. The tjap (pronounced like "chop") printing blocks seen here are from Indonesia, dating between 1900-1950. These blocks are made of copper strips and wire but tjap blocks can also be made of wood. The Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection: May 2010

http://hlatc.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 19, 2010. Hello and welcome back! I thought you all might enjoy it if I featured some of the pieces we photograph here on the blog. Do I hear a resounding yes? It seems fitting to begin with a piece, LPUS427, designed and created by Helen Louise Allen. Herself. It is an experimental weaving from the 1960s, created as a sort of sampler of different weaving techniques. Made from bast fibers. The piece has an almost rope like texture. Friday, September 25, 2009. Bonnie Cashin Pink Leather Coat. While packing some of our costume collection this past week, Laura noticed some debris in the pocket of the piece she was working with. Upon further inspection, we discovered it was tobacco left behind by the previous owner/wearer. The tobacco had likely been in the pocket for over 30 years! The coat, HLATC BCC27. Is a pink leather Bonnie Cashin design created in collaboration with Philip Sills. On the FIDM museum blog. HLATC 1991.22.8. This ha...

Just over a month ago, Sue Polanka (authoress of the No Shelf Required blog) posted a Credo Reference press release. Not only that, but how on earth could one simply browse the material or pinpoint exactly what s/he is looking for? Friday, October 23, 2009. Resource Review #5: Credo is on the Faceplace. Wall is essentially a series of daily trivia questions based on an image or quotation with its fans providing the answers and Credo confirming them. The funny part is that some of Credo's replies mention how quick they were to correctly answer the question, some even going so far as to site the source of their information (this is why reference librarians rock: they are thorough). Friday, September 25, 2009. Resource Review #1: Credontials. Advanced searching is similar to other databases in that one can limit the ways in which to search. The concept map was something I cannot say I've ever seen before: one types in a term and a diagram is created with various synonymous or relative terms/concepts (anything goes here, though the relationships may not initially make sense- the algorithm obviously works off of the root word. Try "martini"). Friday, September 18, 2009. Much to my del...
