Doc's 'Art' of War: June 2014
http://docsartofwar.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 15, 2014. Chain of Command test for the Galatas game (Crete) - another balmy Sunday down t'club! OK perhaps 'balmy' is a bit of an exaggeration - it is the middle of winter here - but any Sunday down t'club wargaming is a good Sunday! A bucolic Crete village stuffed to the gills with Kiwi and Greek troops. Perfect target for a para drop! Given the Germans specialised in low-level jumps (usually from only a few hundred feet), they couldn't control the direction of their chutes (unlike Allied ...

Doc's 'Art' of War: December 2014

Monday, December 1, 2014. Nearly half my Austro-Russian army now completed. A regiment of dragoons, one of jaeger and two of line? Will finish it up. I have a few nice mounted Perry's officers to go with them too. As command figures I plan to lavish a bit more attention on them. The Warlord box was the one with the metal command stand that contains those very useful cords and tassels for the standards. The plastics are OK - reasonable detail and poses (well, they are all marching aren't they? I've made t...

Doc's 'Art' of War: April 2015
http://docsartofwar.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, April 26, 2015. Taken shortly after they enlisted in 1914, Private Smith is the one on the right. I also made several figures of Tasmanian Light Horsemen - one mounted (charging at Beersheba? And the other charging on foot (landing at Gallipoli? These are Australian made 54mm figures and not too bad as such figures go - although nothing of the quality of the Perry's that have been done for Peter Jackson and are now part of a magnificent exhibition of Chunuk Bair in Wellington. I have some photos ...

Doc's 'Art' of War: February 2015

Friday, February 27, 2015. More Mamelukes and a couple of BIG guns. As you can see I've added some appropriate puffs of smoke to her as she's fired off. The plume from the barrel is wrapped around a thin piece of florist's wire to keep it rigid. Quite a pleasing effect but don't if I'll use it for even wargame. After much umming and arring I decided to mount both the figures and gum on large 120 x 80mm bases and using my new rocky desert flocking mix. Not to be forgotten are my Old Glory Mamelukes. A...

Tuesday, February 11, 2014. Basque-ing in the glory: Carlists do the Isabelinos in Carlist Wars game. It was our monthly meet at the Lanyan Vikings and there were half a dozen games and over 20 gamers - not a bad effort! Jap's in Andrew's jungle - a very unpleasant thing to encounter - they need a dose of 'Honey' to get rid of the infection! The Honey all shot up - the driver dead and the loader with his hands full - can only stand off and blaze away at the Jap's in their well camouflaged bunkers. The Ca...

Doc's 'Art' of War: Napoleonic Ottomans: the Nizam-i Cedit finished
http://docsartofwar.blogspot.com/2015/07/napoleonic-ottomans-nizam-i-cedit.html
Monday, July 13, 2015. Napoleonic Ottomans: the Nizam-i Cedit finished. A couple of Dixon(? Figures I made into a command stand. The Porte depended on this elite of fierce Muslim converts to provide the backbone of the Turkish army for centuries and it is no surprise that they became a powerful force sometimes even dictating who became the Ottoman Sultan! Lieutenant) of Nizan-i Cedit and standard-bearer. The officer on the other end (in the round cap) is a kolugasi. March column of Nizam led by a kolugasi.

Saturday, May 23, 2015. Indian Mutiny figures and village. Our project for the 'Little wars' con later this year is to put on a Black Powder Indian Mutiny game. I was a bit concerned that I had no figures or scenery but have managed to find some Mutiny Sepoys and got a few stands of tribals. Together with some of my Egyptian Janissaries and Mamelukes - who quite easily pass for northern Indian Punjabi tribesmen - I'll be able to contribute a few regiments. Pretty happy with the way they turned out, looki...
