Hogg's Research: #streams2015, day 4
http://hoggresearch.blogspot.com/2015/07/streams2015-day-5.html
Galaxies, stellar dynamics, exoplanets, and fundamental astronomy. Streams2015, day 4. As a result of crippling disorganization, blog posting has gone pear-shaped. I will be posting out-of-date posts with correct dates (and 23:59 time stamps), but possibly considerably after the fact and out of chronological order.]. Another great day at Ringberg Castle today. For me, the highlight was an unconference session called Gaia Zero-Day Exploit. Which was about what we could do immediately upon release of Gaia.
Hogg's Research: likelihood functions for stellar age relations
http://hoggresearch.blogspot.com/2015/08/likelihood-functions-for-stellar-age.html
Galaxies, stellar dynamics, exoplanets, and fundamental astronomy. Likelihood functions for stellar age relations. Bird (Vanderbilt) and I pair-coded a likelihood function for the age–velocity relation in the Milky Way Disk. After that, I coded up a likelihood function for the star-formation history in the Milky Way disk, given very noisy age estimates (from The Cannon. Price-Whelan, Rix, and I discussed a brute-force search for stellar streams in stellar catalogs called KingKong. I'm on the web here.
Hogg's Research: 2015-07
http://hoggresearch.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Galaxies, stellar dynamics, exoplanets, and fundamental astronomy. I gave the Königstuhl Colloquium on data-driven models. With preparing for that and a long lunch, no other research today! Links to this post. Milky Way disk kinematics. Data plus stellar ages from Ness's recent work with The Cannon. Links to this post. At Milky Way group meeting, Price-Whelan talked about chaotic streams, Gail Zasowski (JHU) talked about the SDSS. In the afternoon, Rix and I worked with Bird to turn his empirical velocit...
Hogg's Research: model derivatives
http://hoggresearch.blogspot.com/2015/08/model-derivatives.html
Galaxies, stellar dynamics, exoplanets, and fundamental astronomy. Today Yuan-Sen Ting (Harvard) gave Ness and me derivatives of Kurucz-like models of APOGEE. Spectral data with respect to individual element abundances and effective temperature and gravity. Ness and I plotted these theoretical derivatives against “beliefs” obtained by The Cannon. Sbout these same dependencies. They agree remarkably well! Can detect or measure individual abundances are very, very high. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Hogg's Research: exoplanet dynamics, sucking
http://hoggresearch.blogspot.com/2015/05/exoplanet-dynamics-sucking.html
Galaxies, stellar dynamics, exoplanets, and fundamental astronomy. Exoplanet dynamics, sucking. In group meeting, Dun Wang talked about astrometric calibration of the GALEX. Satellite, and Kat Deck (Caltech) talked about the dynamical evolution of exoplanetary systems. She pointed out that we naively expect lots of planets close in period to be locked in resonances, but in fact such resonances are rare, empirically in the Kepler. Than the Lyapunov time. Awesome and important. At the end of the day, Forem...

a geocentric view: Scientists in Movies (and TV)
http://mollishka.blogspot.com/2007/09/scientists-in-movies-and-tv.html
Somewhat random thoughts on astronomy, grad school, traveling, this, that, and the other as well. Saturday, September 08, 2007. Scientists in Movies (and TV). 8212;and even Kushiel's Avatar. Does a better job at trying to guess what it would be like to hold the supposedly unholdable Name of God in one's head. No It's ridiculous. Now get over yourself. Even most movies which clearly try to be realistic fall short. Take for example the play-based Proof. That "we can only get three sides to fit together!

a geocentric view: The Universe Chandelier
http://mollishka.blogspot.com/2006/05/universe-chandelier.html
Somewhat random thoughts on astronomy, grad school, traveling, this, that, and the other as well. Tuesday, May 09, 2006. The astronomy department took a bit of a field trip over to the Wexner Center sometime during winter quarter when the sculpture was still on display there. David and Josiah were both there to explain and discuss it. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the whole thing. I'm not usually one for art; I often find myself wanting. NPRs Research: November 2006
http://nicsresearch.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, November 29, 2006. Massive) Galaxy/Quasar evolution solved! Last paragraph in Section 4 of this. Ah well. Looks like we all need to start looking for new jobs. Posted by NPR at 12:21 PM. Tuesday, November 28, 2006. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio. On a slight departure from this blogs regular theme - and a potentially more controverstial note - discussions with Watling (Durham) last night led me to question the validity of the Apollo missions. Posted by NPR at 10:39 AM.
Data - Theory And Practice

Life on the lattice: LATTICE 2015, Day One
http://latticeqcd.blogspot.com/2015/07/lattice-2015-day-one.html
Life on the lattice. Thoughts on lattice QCD, particle physics and the world at large. Tuesday, July 14, 2015. LATTICE 2015, Day One. Hello from Kobe, where I am attending the Lattice 2015 conference. The trip here was uneventful, as was the jetlag-day. The conference started yesterday evening with a reception in the Kobe Animal Kingdom (there were no animals when we were there, though, with the exception of some fish in a pond and some cats in a cage, but there were lot of plants). After the lunch break...
Life on the lattice: Twisted Mass Fermions
http://latticeqcd.blogspot.com/2006/03/twisted-mass-fermions.html
Life on the lattice. Thoughts on lattice QCD, particle physics and the world at large. Tuesday, March 28, 2006. Time for another post in our series about lattice fermions. So far we have talked about naive. In this post, we are going to take a look at a still fairly new approach to lattice fermions that is known under the name of twisted mass QCD. What one does in this approach is to take the Dirac operator for a flavour doublet of fermions and add to it a chirally twisted mass term. With the twisted mass.
Life on the lattice: Non-Relativistic QCD
http://latticeqcd.blogspot.com/2006/05/non-relativistic-qcd.html
Life on the lattice. Thoughts on lattice QCD, particle physics and the world at large. Monday, May 29, 2006. As it turns out, that limit is also difficult to handle, but for entirely different reasons: The correlation functions, from which the properties of bound states are extracted, show an exponential decay of the form. Is the number of timesteps, and. Which means that the correlation functions for an. Mesons. This means that the heavy quarks are moving at non-relativistic velocities. The correspondin...

Nothing to see here, please move along people. Nothing really, didn't I just tell you that above? Eventually there will probably be some articles regarding C# development, but for the moment there aren't any to show you. So why are you still here reading this? Please don't, we will most probably have absolutely nothing to say to each other.

Hogg's Research
Galaxies, stellar dynamics, exoplanets, and fundamental astronomy. Today was a snow day. So everything got cancelled, and I met up anyway with a small team, in an undisclosed location. And did my busy work that I have been avoiding. Most of this is not research. But I did comment on some parts of various student and postdoc papers. Links to this post. Tracing dark matter with old stars. Because dark-matter detection experiments depend on it. How? Links to this post. About the Milky Way! Links to this post.
