February 15, 2016. Well the snow is falling again on the homestead. As of yesterday the ducks had been fighting valiantly to keep a small home of open water in the icy pond. I am amazed every day how cold tolerant ducks are. The fact they can swim in that ice hole and stand for long periods on the ice is astounding. When I’m not mesmerized by the ducks, I’ve been working on the goat area. I’ve got three side of the area enclosed by fencing and have installed a gate to the front side. January 24, 2016.

Not for want of an egg. July 28, 2015. The wait for our ducks to start laying eggs seemed to take an eternity, and once we saw our first few eggs that was all we were seeing, a few eggs. Two, possibly three eggs per day out of what we believe are 11 females. Possibly due to peer pressure, and not the fact they are all the same age, we have gotten 15 eggs in 2 days. July 19, 2015. My country list: 2. July 17, 2015. July 19, 2015. One of our first nights in the country was a moonless one and we were amazed by the darkness. You really don’t understand the capabilities of a flashlight until you see it cut through that kind of dark. The light from a good flashlight looks like a physical beam that you could reach out and grab. For you Star Wars fans out there picture carrying a light saber to light your way. A morning of reflections. August 1, 2015. We made an offer a few days later, before we had even listed our current house. Our offer was contingent on us selling our house, which turned out to be so little of problem it is almost laughable. Because of all my wife had done to the house over that last year in getting the house ready to sell, our little starter home was on the market and had multiple offers within 72 hours. We were moving to the country. Wait what’s that you say? Not for want of an egg.

How to make a chickens day. August 11, 2015. Over the weekend, we had a company cookout at our homestead. We had collected duck eggs for several days and hoped that folks would each take a few to try. Unfortunately getting people to take more than one or two eggs was very difficult, and even when they did take a few they were highly skeptical. Thus we were left with a plethora of duck eggs on this fine Tuesday morning. I decided to make the chickens day and made them a 33 egg duck omelette. You are comme...

July 1, 2015. July 19, 2015. My mind switched gears an instant later, and I realized that I had just grabbed ahold of something that felt nothing like the shell of an egg. I knew now why we seemed to be short on eggs over the past few days. February 26, 2015. July 19, 2015. After 8 months our little piece of land has its namesakes. Our anniversary present to ourselves arrived by mail yesterday morning, and after a quick trip to the post office we have our ducks. We ordered twelve and they sent thirteen; as we understand it, there can be up to 20% mortality in the first few weeks, thus the hatchery hedges their bets. Continue reading →. On Our Christmas tree.
