The journal of a small farm in the Shenandoah Valley of VA. Homestead Hill Farm is the life and livelihood of Tom and Barbara Womack. Growing healthy food for our own use has been a way of life for more years than we care to count. I think I planted my first seed when I was just three years old. Tom (“the Boss” in my blog) was gardening long before we met. I love growing things, living on a small farm and telling the stories of our life here in rural VA. Here’s hoping you’ll follow our FA...It is one of ...

The journal of a small farm in the Shenandoah Valley of VA. Lamb is very nutritious and offers a great number of health benefits. Considerably lower in fat than beef or pork, lamb is an excellent source of protein, vitamin B-12, selenium, niacin and zinc. It is also low in cholesterol and saturated fat and provides a good source of iron and riboflavin. Our lamb is succulent and appetizing, perfect for the grill! It is equally delicious used in any of your favorite lamb recipes. Leg Roast – bone in. NOT Y...

So why when we work so hard, does it feel like farmers are constantly under scrutiny in the public eye? My social media has had everything from videos to pictures to memes showing what an “awful job” farmers do. Everything from chemicals to animal welfare, it’s all been covered. Many consumers like to envisi...

Of Kids and Cows. A glimpse in to our crazy life full kids, cows and the occasional adventure! June 22, 2015. June 22, 2015. We have a monsoon season in Ohio. Sooner or later I’m going to need to find some blue prints for an ark. All this rain has made lots and lots of mud. It’s everywhere. What happens when you have 3 kids, waiting on their mom to finish chores as patiently as they can, when they are surrounded by mud? Then we started losing ground…. You Have A Stroller? Of Kids and Cows. A glimpse in to our crazy life full kids, cows and the occasional adventure! July 23, 2015. My kids, like any other kids, LOVE Popsicles! Most days they can manage to eat them like civil little people. Other days not so much. And let’s face it, that little one although cute, is a walking mess. The tribe has also been politely reminding me that they want to make homemade Popsicles. 1 3 ounce package of jello. 1/3 cup of sugar. 2 cups boiling water. 2 cups cold water. July 14, 2015. 8220;...

Of Kids and Cows. A glimpse in to our crazy life full kids, cows and the occasional adventure! Seperate Is Not Always Bad. July 2, 2015. July 2, 2015. It has recently been brought to my attention some people have negative opinions of how we take care of our youngest herd members. That it’s mean they don’t live side by side with their mothers their entire lives and how our care cannot possibly match up to that of a concerned momma cow. Why do our calves not stay with their mom? We don’t take baby ca...

Of Kids and Cows. A glimpse in to our crazy life full kids, cows and the occasional adventure! When You Give A Boy A Calf. April 7, 2015. December 31, 2015. When you give a boy a calf, you teach him responsibility. He is responsible to help in the daily care of his calf. She must be fed, watered, comfortable and content. Of Kids and Cows. A glimpse in to our crazy life full kids, cows and the occasional adventure! July 16, 2014. I originally found this recipe on Pinterest and thought it looked amazing. Then I read the comments section. They were not so hot. Sticky, burnt pancakes. Pancakes that didn’t flip. The critique was endless. So after thinking for a few seconds I decided to not use the pancake recipe that was listed on the blog post. I had great results. 2 Cups Bisquick baking mix. 1 Cup of Milk. It’s lunch ...

Homestead Hijinks – hello from the homestead side…
Hello from the homestead side…. Scroll down to content. December 5, 2014. I barely slept a wink last night. Logan had his last dose at 7:30 pm, which technically was actually only 1/3 of the actual dose. He coughed a few times, got a stomach ache, and mentioned once his mouth was a little itchy but nothing escalated enough where I felt like Epi was needed. Thank God. 2x in one day is more than enough for me! Will this ever get easier? I sure hope so. He walks over and we look at one another. Poison I hav...

Homestead Hill Farm
The journal of a small farm in the Shenandoah Valley of VA. Sunday, March 25, 2018. After last week’s “robin snow” (supposedly the last one of the season) and the official arrival of SPRING, you may have expected a post filled with tales of Market preparation and garden news. Last Sunday looked like Spring was coming. My ringing ears aside, the vet pronounced her “perfect” and gave her an extra peanut butter treat because she was just SO cute. I think Karma has a new friend for life. Yum, PEANUT BUTTER!
