Howdi Saudi: December 2008

http://howdisaudi.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html

Teaching in Riyadh, the next stage of our adventure. Monday, December 8, 2008. Up on the roof. It's easy for a Western woman to feel quite trapped in this city. So the rooftop of our building is the one place out of doors where a girl can go without having to cover up and be invisible. It was just a hard bare space when we came, but nowadays it's much friendlier. We have a gas barbecue. (That's Paul - he's a bit too tall to get the whole of him in one photo.). And other furniture . I hear you ask). A bun...

Howdi Saudi: August 2008

http://howdisaudi.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Teaching in Riyadh, the next stage of our adventure. Thursday, August 28, 2008. When we first started this ESL caper - leaving the comfortable and the familiar to set off into the unknown for insecurity and adventure . - I felt that going to China was the closest thing to going to another planet, for those of us who can't afford interplanetary travel but have a yearning for something genuinely different. So maybe that was the moon, and this is Mars! Does that sound restrictive and awful? If that was all ...

Howdi Saudi: September 2008

http://howdisaudi.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Teaching in Riyadh, the next stage of our adventure. Thursday, September 25, 2008. A couple of times I have looked out of the windows in our hotel suite. Obviously the windows are not there for views - far from being French windows, the sill is chin-height for me, and they are heavily curtained. When I touched the glass it was really hot, and it took a couple of minutes for my pupils to recover from my quick peek outside. Well, there really isn't much to look at out there! We had to go into the women's s...

Howdi Saudi: January 2009

http://howdisaudi.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Teaching in Riyadh, the next stage of our adventure. Friday, January 30, 2009. Right after our last break - half a semester ago now - we had a party at Dar Al Uloom. It was to celebrate Eid - well, the holiday we had just had. There was a (very big) cake. Underneath that perfect creamy icing, half of it was chocolate and half was vanilla. It was a bit like Alice in Wonderland eating from two sides of the mushroom. And then there were drinks. And lots of other yummy foods. Even doughnuts, and Arabic coffee.

Howdi Saudi: Beautiful City

http://howdisaudi.blogspot.com/2009/07/beautiful-city.html

Teaching in Riyadh, the next stage of our adventure. Wednesday, July 22, 2009. Yeah, you're right. This is not Riyadh. (Riyadh has a special beauty all its own.). This is Brisbane. It's really lovely - and right now the weather makes it even more stunning. Yesterday we rode one of the CityCat ferries up the river from where we are staying at New Farm with son, and stepped off at South Bank. It was lovely. Only $15 for four turns around. And then we watched kids (large and small) playing with water. HOWLI...

For We are Jolly Good Fellows!: December 2013

http://wearejollygoodfellows.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Saturday, December 7, 2013. Jumping out of a Perfectly Good Plane. James' (son) birthday is very soon, Lisa (wife) bought him a sky dive. As she couldn't be here, we were minding the kids and recording the event. So, what is it like - jumping out of a perfectly good plane? Here is the place to go . And of course there are forms to fill in and sign. And now his name is on the whiteboard - "James. T14" because he is jumping out (in tandem with an instructor) at 14 000 feet. Now we have quite a wait. And th...

Brisbane Master Class: December 2010

http://brisbanemasterclass.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Living in Brisbane city while doing our Masters at Wollongong. Saturday, December 18, 2010. Studies finished, time to head south. Despite the inclement weather . it rained most of the way as we drove to Orange (NSW) to visit our old friends S and C - with whom we also spent time with when we were in the UK. We spent three happy days with them in their country-style cottage, helping them look after three little girls. Lovely little spot to recover from the rigours of study and all that! We both got all cl...

For We are Jolly Good Fellows!: June 2014

http://wearejollygoodfellows.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 13, 2014. A new adventure starts - in Northam. So we don't really want to go to Ningbo. (Although they have offered us jobs - six weeks later.). Northam looks nice, though, doesn't it? And there might be some jobs there - or we could just kinda retire .). For some people living in a place like Northam in the wheat-belt area of Western Australia would be ordinary. But after everywhere we've been, for us it is another new adventure. So what's in Northam? And, of course, there is lots more!

Torquay Talkie: I Remember Sidmouth Beach

http://torquaytalkie.blogspot.com/2007/12/i-remember-sidmouth-beach.html

Teaching English in the seaside resort of Torquay on the south coast of Devon. Tuesday, December 11, 2007. I Remember Sidmouth Beach. It's been wet and windy and cold for about a week . well, what would you expect in winter in England? But then, suddenly, a sunny day! So we hopped in the car and went to see Sidmouth - our favourite summer beach spot back in the sixties. So there are really two beaches at Sidmouth. There's this one, the first one you come to. And in between - wonderful rock pools. Connaug...

Torquay Talkie: Great Little Town, Cullompton

http://torquaytalkie.blogspot.com/2007/12/great-little-town-cullompton.html

Teaching English in the seaside resort of Torquay on the south coast of Devon. Monday, December 10, 2007. Great Little Town, Cullompton. So then my brother John dropped in on his way from Germany back to Western Australia. So we went to have another look at our childhood home - Cullompton again. It's normal in these little Devon towns for the main street to be called Fore Street or High Street, but we found this amusing. I got to have another look at the church . Yup, there's the alley. And Roger Vey...

Teaching English in the seaside resort of Torquay on the south coast of Devon. Sunday, December 16, 2007. Time to Say Goodbye. Not exactly what we were expecting . But then we didn't have a clear idea of what to expect. The quiet period of the year in teaching English as a Second Language has just past, and the jobs are coming on-line again. At the University of East Anglia, in Norwich. We start on January 7, so we have to get moving. University of East Anglia. View my complete profile. A Collection of T...

The British Job: Sussex - castles and churches

http://britishjob.blogspot.com/2007/11/sussex-castles-and-churches.html

Back to Britain after Australia, China and Turkey. Saturday, November 3, 2007. Sussex - castles and churches. Not only did Charlotte's family squeeze over to give us somewhere to stay, but Charlotte's mum, Susan - a very knowledgeable person in the local area, history and folklore - took us around a bit to show us some places. We went to visit this magnificent old church at Lyminster, quite near Rustington. On another day we went to Chichester. And come back later to find their car inundated. That side o...

The British Job: Nothing is brighter than Brighton

http://britishjob.blogspot.com/2007/11/nothing-is-brighter-than-brighton.html

Back to Britain after Australia, China and Turkey. Friday, November 2, 2007. Nothing is brighter than Brighton. Charlotte picked us up at Brighton railway station - bags and all squeezed into her tiny red car - and we trundled along the scenic coastal route (a decision we all instantly regretted as we were soon tightly traffic jammed). We paused along the way to have an actual look at the actual beach at Brighton. Not quite Bondi, though, ay? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Our Websites for ESL.

The British Job: Rustington!

http://britishjob.blogspot.com/2007/11/rustington.html

Back to Britain after Australia, China and Turkey. Friday, November 2, 2007. What a delightful name for a little place in England! Charlotte and her mother and brother live in this tiny end-of-terrace home in Rustington. This was really our first taste of home life in Britain - it's all a lot more squeezy than we are used to in Oz - and this lovely family all squeezed over just a little more so that we would have a place to stay. But what has Peter noticed? What's the big deal? This was a very special me...

Reading ‘Berlin Stories’ by Christopher Isherwood. It causes a dissatisfying curiosity which is never quite sated when I finished reading. Overall, though, I like Berlin Stories. The characters are interesting, a bit exaggerated perhaps, but drawn from life. Isherwood’s personal life does seem to be his wellspring of inspiration, him sipping from it more than some others. But why not? Mr Norris Changes Trains. It had been a while since I’d last seen him. Patrick, I mean. We lost contact sometime ...It he...
