City of Slack: October 2011
http://ctyofslack.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 3, 2011. Things to moan about 1: chronic tinnitus. I think today might be more misery memoir than shooting the breeze. Yes, I’m having a moan. Again. I suffer from chronic tinnitus (as written about previously here. And it has effected two of what were formerly great pleasures, reading and walking in the mountains. I do still read (though at one point I gave up entirely), but it is a battle, my focus is constantly distracted - I feel like I’m only skimming the surface of the wor...When I&...

City of Slack: December 2010
http://ctyofslack.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Monday, December 27, 2010. Hope, or not. I'm trying to bring the narrative of the past 3 posts round to a positive end. Things have changed, up until a few days a go I thought for the better – though at the moment I feel quite uncertain. Here’s hoping it will pass. I’ll try and keep busy. More madness and misery. With vodka on the side. Having started the narrative of my madness and misery I feel the need to continue, get it off my chest, to represent in the hope it might make things better…. There’...

City of Slack: At The University of Wellness
http://ctyofslack.blogspot.com/2012/05/at-university-of-wellness.html
Thursday, May 3, 2012. At The University of Wellness. Carla Morris shut her eyes and relaxed, trying to follow the teacher’s instructions to let her weight fall into the floor and feel like she was at one with the universe. Only she couldn’t because she didn’t know what the teacher was on about. She knew what it meant to feel tired, or happy, or sad – but at one with the universe? She drew a blank. City of Slack: June 2010
http://ctyofslack.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 14, 2010. It could only work if people’s fantasies were quite modest, based on doing something rather than achieving some formal recognition of their talents. Struggling artist/musician types would be the best contestants. A great project is always round the corner, if only? This would be a way of helping them achieve their dreams of sending some songs to a record label, reading their poetry at a festival, or whatever. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). City of Slack: July 2010
http://ctyofslack.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, July 4, 2010. The Land of Cockaigne. Another post about fantasy. In medieval times there existed the fantasy of The Land Of Cockaigne. A mythical land of plenty in which food is available in abundance, where ‘roasted pigs wander about with knives in their backs to make carving easy, where grilled geese fly directly into one's mouth, where cooked fish jump out of the water and land at one's feet’. Hunger featured heavily in the life of the medieval peasant. Labels: Land of Cockaigne.

City of Slack: On buying things that on closer inspection you find you don’t like
http://ctyofslack.blogspot.com/2012/05/on-buying-things-that-on-closer.html
Friday, May 4, 2012. On buying things that on closer inspection you find you don’t like. We all must have been there; bought something impulsively, thinking it’s fabulous, then, after a day or two (or an hour or two) of owning it, you look at it and realize that it was not what you thought it was. You have somehow miss-seen it. It wasn’t a loud pattern, it was quite subtle, but I don’t like leopard skin patterns. Even as a detail on a trainer they look inappropriate. Somehow I am going to have to find a ...

Thursday, April 15, 2010. Malcolm Pedigree: The Golf Detective. I found this 'conceptual framework' in an old file from a decade ago, but thought I'd post it as golf is so much part of the zeitgeist at the moment, what with The Masters and Tiger Woods.]. A golf club is perfect for hitting with, whether you hit golf balls or heads is purely a matter of taste. NOVELS IN THE SERIES. Death at the Nineteenth Hole. A Hole in Death. City of Slack: The Coming Of The Executive Goth
http://ctyofslack.blogspot.com/2012/04/coming-of-executive-goth.html
Wednesday, April 25, 2012. The Coming Of The Executive Goth. Things are changing in the boardroom, at least sartorially. For years the look in the city and the higher echelons of business has been suit, shirt and tie for the boys, smart but sexy for the girls, with very little deviation, apart from on the occasional dress down Friday - which generally produced results as dull as the rest of the week. If your were an old bloke, wouldn't you like someone like me around the office? Where will it end? The Un...
