Hyperbole and a Half

Power is intoxicating. Everyone loves having the ability to make their decisions into reality — to think "this should be something that happens," and then actually be able to make that thing happen. It is also dangerous. And it is especially. Dangerous when applied to four-year-olds. Four-year-olds lack the experience to wield power responsibly. They have no idea what to do with it or how to control it. But they like it. But being a dinosaur felt natural. Of course, I had always had the ability to do the...

Hyperbole and a Half: The Alot is Better Than You at Everything

http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html

The Alot is Better Than You at Everything. As a grammatically conscientious person who frequents internet forums and YouTube, I have found it necessary to develop a few coping mechanisms. When someone types out "u" instead of "you," instead of getting mad, I imagine them having only one finger on each hand and then their actions seem reasonable. If I only had one finger on each hand, I'd leave out unnecessary letters too! But there is one grammatical mistake that I particularly enjoy encountering. It...

Hyperbole and a Half: This is Why I'll Never be an Adult

http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/06/this-is-why-ill-never-be-adult.html

This is Why I'll Never be an Adult. I have repeatedly discovered that it is important for me not to surpass my capacity for responsibility. Over the years, this capacity has grown, but the results of exceeding it have not changed. Normally, my capacity is exceeded gradually, through the accumulation of simple, daily tasks. But a few times a year, I spontaneously decide that I'm ready to be a real. The first day or two of my plans usually goes okay. Just look at my groceries. This is a mistake. The longer...

Hyperbole and a Half: Depression Part Two

http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2013/05/depression-part-two.html

I remember being endlessly entertained by the adventures of my toys. Some days they died repeated, violent deaths, other days they traveled to space or discussed my swim lessons and how I absolutely should be allowed in the deep end of the pool, especially since I was such a talented doggy-paddler. I didn't understand why it was fun for me, it just was. Depression feels almost exactly like that, except about everything. The beginning of my depression had been nothing but. I tried to get out more, but mos...

Hyperbole and a Half: Adventures in Depression

http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2011/10/adventures-in-depression.html

Some people have a legitimate reason to feel depressed, but not me. I just woke up one day feeling sad and helpless for absolutely no reason. But my sadness didn't have a purpose. Listening to sad music and imagining that my life was a movie just made me feel kind of weird because I couldn't really get behind the idea of a movie where the character is sad for no reason. Essentially, I was being robbed of my right to feel self pity, which is the only redeeming part of sadness. Which made me more sad.

Hyperbole and a Half: This is Why I Have Hundreds of Unpublished Posts...

http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/02/this-is-why-i-have-hundreds-of.html

This is Why I Have Hundreds of Unpublished Posts. I drew this today:. I thought it was really funny. I showed it to Boyfriend, and he looked at it for an awkwardly long time before looking up at me and making a sound that was too tainted with confusion to be considered laughter. So I was like " Get it. It's funny because those triangles only look fun to hang out with because I drew them that way.". I could have drawn mean triangles, but I drew happy, fun-looking ones.". Yes you did.". Nope Sorry. Too...

With My Dogs By My Side: November 2012

http://briannel.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 19, 2012. The weather on Friday morning. Damp, dewy, cool. Still adjusting to the manicure. (Even today, I'm still adjusting to texting with it.). Intimidated. (If you're wondering, the final tally was $70. You'll see the results shortly.). We went to a second Trader Joe's for for variety, and then Meijer for good measure. The flowers waited in the car while we stopped for breakfast at Hardee's/. My assistant florist had a lot of input about what flowers worked together. Even I was clear...

Tales of an intrepid pantster: Review: Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

http://alicethewriter.blogspot.com/2014/10/review-journey-to-center-of-earth-by.html

Tales of an intrepid pantster. I'm making this up as I go along. What to Expect from this Blog. Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Review: Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne. Journey to the Center of the Earth: A Signature Performance by Tim Curry. My rating: 4 of 5 stars. If it hadn't been Tim Curry reading this to me, I wouldn't have soldiered through it. He adds a much-needed spark to the story. His narration is dynamic, and was often the only reason I kept listening. It was nice ...Rose-Owls...

Tales of an intrepid pantster: Review: A Local Habitation

http://alicethewriter.blogspot.com/2011/12/review-local-habitation.html

Tales of an intrepid pantster. I'm making this up as I go along. What to Expect from this Blog. Saturday, December 3, 2011. Review: A Local Habitation. My rating: 4 of 5 stars. This is the second in a series that will, hopefully, go for a really long time. I read the first standing in lines at Dragon*Con, which should give you a good enough idea of how riveting it was. This one matches, then outpaces it, for sheer sucking-the-reader-in. Not enough to keep me from reading, clearly. View all my reviews.

Tales of an intrepid pantster: Review: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami

Tales of an intrepid pantster. I'm making this up as I go along. What to Expect from this Blog. Saturday, September 13, 2014. Review: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. My rating: 5 of 5 stars. This is the ninth book in my 2014 TBR Challenge. My sister gave it to me as a Christmas present years ago, but I set it aside for a time when I could get over the intimidation factor. Interestingly, I would not have appreciated it the way I do if I'd read it right away.

Tales of an intrepid pantster: Review: The Masqueraders by Georgette Heyer

http://alicethewriter.blogspot.com/2014/11/review-masqueraders-by-georgette-heyer.html

Tales of an intrepid pantster. I'm making this up as I go along. What to Expect from this Blog. Monday, November 3, 2014. Review: The Masqueraders by Georgette Heyer. My rating: 4 of 5 stars. The strength of the story lies in its characters. Prudence and Robin and their father are all rogues to their core, and it's impossible not to root for them. Prudence lives up to her name, though her loyalty to her brother holds her to her role. As little respect as the siblings have for their father, it...The love ...

The LOL Hotel: May 2012

http://thelolhotel.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Weird things happen when you work at a hotel. Wednesday, May 30, 2012. We had two check-ins left tonight when I got here, and both had the same last name. It's about 15 minutes into the shift when a fella comes in to check in the first. He gives his last name, so I ask him if he was Jim or Zachary, and he says:. Jim Zachary was a mistake. Well. um. Zachary wasn't a MISTAKE. but he isn't coming tonight.". Glad to know Zachary was well-planned-for. :p. Friday, May 18, 2012. They let the deer drive. I stutt...

The LOL Hotel: Night Auditor Enlightenment

http://thelolhotel.blogspot.com/2013/02/night-auditor-enlightenment.html

Weird things happen when you work at a hotel. Friday, February 22, 2013. My friends, it is time for me to move on. For a number of reasons, including a baby who is coming soon, a job in something I would like to make longterm, and just generally needing to move away from the hotels, this shall be my last post. A chapter is closed. On that note - I would like to share the things I have learned in my two and a half years as an auditor. You have reached Night Auditor Enlightenment. The presentation of an AA...

Monday, February 11, 2013. BECAUSE MY GALLBLADDER IS A DOUCHEBAG AND DECIDED A YEAR AGO. TO STOP PERFORMING ITS DESIGNATED FU NCTION , I AM HAVING IT CUT OUT TOMORROW. See you on the other side of anesthesia-land. Wednesday, February 6, 2013. THINGS THAT MAKE ME GO LIKE BITCH WHATEVER. People who tell me that I need to be more ladylike and swear less. People who tell me I am too old to not be married yet. When tannies and oumas (usually not mine) ask me when The Boyfriend and I are getting married. Lack ...

The NEW Mann Clan. Wednesday, October 27, 2010. To honor the hilarious Bo Burnham. And his new song Words Words Words. I want to report on about LT's vocabulary.er.things that sound like words :). In the past 2 weeks we have got. Ball - all about throwing and keep away. Went to the park and had to keep steering him off the soccer field. Night Night - we like to tell Jack Jack Night Night in the bathtub. Mama(though I think he means he wants food a lot). Boo - cutest thing.very soft little "boo". So excit...
