Who Works With Us. The Heart of Wednesday’s General Conference Vote on Ordination. July 7, 2015. The Seventh-day Adventist denomination’s 60th General Conference meeting now in San Antonio, TX, includes a vote on whether any of the 13 worldwide divisions of the church may provide for women’s ordination to ministry. I wrote about this conversation earlier this year. And the vote will occur on Wednesday, July 8. Laura Ochs Wibberding told Adventist Today readers. Whereas the Seventh-day Adventist Church se...

Who Works With Us. Philanthropy, Misanthropy, and Outrage. April 9, 2015. If there were a stock for outrage, conventional media, 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 non-profit and lobbying groups, and fundraising platforms would be mutual investors. Outrage is hot right now, and it’s making some people hundreds of thousands of dollars. Earlier this month I shared an Indiegogo campaign. Generated a great deal of media attention and nearly 400 unique donors contributed before it closed. Crowd-supported campaigns excite me.

Who Works With Us. The Movement Moment: Change, Denial, and the Fall of Empire. May 19, 2015. A director at one of the organizations I support recently asked me what I thought “the movement moment” was. What’s the spirit of this time? What’s rising up? The movement, I said, is life. The system demands we assimilate, and teaches us. The movement is not about the right to assimilate. But the movement is not about rugged, respectable, individual survival. The movement is about justice. It’s fidelity t...

Who Works With Us. Reaching for the Church. July 10, 2015. Two days have passed since the 2015 General Conference delegation denied GC divisions the option of ordination without regard to gender. I tuned into the pre-vote discussion through the Hope Channel live stream and Twitter, and was stunned by how disconnected many questions and comments were from the nearly two-year Theology of Ordination Study Committee process. And we time-warped back to the 1973 and 1995 debates all over again. I’ve been...
