The Pai Intersect

Exploring Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Philosophy. Thursday, 2 July 2015. Post-it Mario and Pikachu. There are many delicious ways to cook with chicken, right? I've alluded to this perspective of mine a few times, and wrote about some. Of it more explicitly in this last post. Believing in that every teacher brings (and should bring) their own touch and their own personality to any raw idea, is why I love open-ended "idea sites" like 101qs. Edit: since this draft, there's another post. A few we...

The Pai Intersect: Student evidence record with Google Spreadsheet

http://www.intersectpai.blogspot.com/2015/01/student-evidence-record-with-google.html

Exploring Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Philosophy. Monday, 26 January 2015. Student evidence record with Google Spreadsheet. Before you read onwards, you should probably read my other post about the different strategies for assessment. Since I think it's more important than this sheet, because it's just a tool), as well as what I did before with excel. I have to first thank @. For setting this up with me initially a year or two ago - that I've been using and modifying ever since. All of the wo...

The Pai Intersect: Randomizing groups

http://www.intersectpai.blogspot.com/2015/01/randomizing-groups.html

Exploring Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Philosophy. Monday, 26 January 2015. Other people have already talked about this, but there are good benefits to visible random grouping. I am going to credit it to Peter Liljedahl. As that's where I first heard of the term. Visible random grouping was one of the three pillars that Peter described as supporting environments for problem solving. But I'm not really here to chat about the research, feel free to check out this powerpoint. Here are the goods:.

A bunch of teachers have done Log Wars. It seems to came into our community through @. Who got the idea from Denise at Let's Play Math. It has since then been used in a few other's classrooms as well (goes to show that we need @. To popularize everything for us! The idea is straightforward but powerful for practicing purposes. http://www.intersectpai.blogspot.com/2015/01/2015-where-i-was-and-where-i-am-with-ane.html

Exploring Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Philosophy. Thursday, 22 January 2015. 2015) where I was and where I am with AnE. It's towards exam season for a lot of us, and so I figured it'd be timely to share what I've been doing with my students with respect to assessments. Initially I planned on writing about where I was, where I am, and. Where I want to go. However, since this is turning out to be a monster post, I will focus on where I was and where I am. As some sort of end-all-be-all blanket ...

Hexagon- the first spark | DIY: Math PD

https://diymathpd.wordpress.com/2014/10/30/hexagon-the-first-spark

Sometimes it's better to just do it ourselves. Hexagon- the first spark. This was my warmup today:. Draw a six-sided shape. I followed up in our discussion with “Is a hexagon a 6-sided shape? 8221; and “Are all 6-sided shapes hexagons? 8221; Tomorrow they’re going to be in groups to categorize the shapes from Christopher Danielson’s Hierarchy of Hexagons. Project. These are my probably incoherent notes:. Lots of people said yes, so we had to look up the definition of a hexagon. 6th period: Much less deba...

Hallmark ain’t got nothin’ on us. | DIY: Math PD

https://diymathpd.wordpress.com/2014/04/16/hallmark-aint-got-nothin-on-us

Sometimes it's better to just do it ourselves. Hallmark ain’t got nothin’ on us. We did an awesome project today inspired by Fawn. Coming up on area of composite shapes, I needed a way for students to practice the composite-ness and the “splitting up” skill. A popular text book problem asks about pools and tiling/grass/etc around the pool in the yard, so I thought about having them draw a pool and do all that jazz, but I couldn’t really get that idea together. Foreshadowing of calculus: the smaller we sp...

NCTM14 -> New members? | DIY: Math PD

https://diymathpd.wordpress.com/2014/04/13/nctm14

Sometimes it's better to just do it ourselves. NCTM14 - New members? NCTM 2014 left me ON FIRE. (Almost literally, it was so hot walking around on Saturday.) But seriously, it left me hungry for more: more PrBL in my classroom, more student conversations, more teacher online collaboration, more ed conversations, more all of it. Give a “new teacher” discount” a la student discount (how do you define/prove “new teacher”)? Give a first-time attender discount? As well as a similar one for prospective teachers.

Hexagons, cont. | DIY: Math PD

https://diymathpd.wordpress.com/2014/11/03/hexagons-cont

Sometimes it's better to just do it ourselves. Friday, we dove into a modified version of Christopher Danielson’s hexagon activity as partially described in my previous post. Instead of coming up with classifications for each individual shape, I asked students to group the shapes. Not a lot for them to go on. Here’s what I saw…. These pieces fit like a puzzle. They’re long and skinny. They look the same. Just enough so that each hexagon is in one group. November 3, 2014. Hexagon- the first spark. You are...

Small Groups | DIY: Math PD

https://diymathpd.wordpress.com/2014/10/29/small-groups

Sometimes it's better to just do it ourselves. Was able to do small groups with proofs today. I let them self-select into my facilitated group while the rest of the class tried on their own and checked against answer key posted online. Identified where individual students had trouble. Automatic buy-in because of the self-select. Students who were working independently were excited to try the proofs on their own. Only got through 1 proof. Math Coolisms: The Curse of Rote Teaching [PEMDAS & its Siblings]

http://mathcoolisms.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-curse-of-rote-learning-pemdas-its.html

Where Math Education matters most! Sunday, June 30, 2013. The Curse of Rote Teaching [PEMDAS and its Siblings]. An excellent question was raised in the Global Math Department. Bulletin board that I decided to elaborate upon in here. In this post, I will address an MB related to PEMDAS. So, what to make of a student's treatment of let's say 4-6(3 x. The same way as -2(3 x. So, have the students predict the nature of the graphs associated with the above two expressions and then have them execute the actual...

InterSector Partners, L3C. We founded interSector Partners, L3C on February 20, 2009 based on our belief that the nonprofit, business and government sectors can work together and learn from each other and that the true opportunity for building a better world lies in a combined social, economic and environmental bottom line. Many people questioned our timing— “A new business in the worst economic downturn in 100 years? Rdquo;—but none questioned our business model and philosophy. Read more.
