In The Square

Monday, March 2, 2009. Once, when asked what my pet peeve was, I responded, "Typos on billboards and signs." If typos are annoying in small print, obviously, increasing the point size and displaying them for the world to see only exacerbates the pain. Last year, Deck traveled across the country, conducting the 2008 Typo Hunt Across America. Usually, TEAL attempts to gain permission to correct signage, but they have had at least one run-in with the law over editing a historic marker in a national park.

In The Square: November 2007

http://www.inthesquare.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Friday, November 30, 2007. Closed for the holidays. A printer I work with sent this postcard to inform us of the dates they are closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. I paid special attention to it, because of my how to snowperson. Project. I love the snow turkey. How cute! This is much more personal than an email with closing dates, and I will actually keep it, rather than deleting the email. Wednesday, November 28, 2007. Now that's a photo shoot. Friday, February 15, 2008. This Cake Is as Old as Helvetica! With a name like German Chocolate Cake, you would think this dessert was cooked up in some Bavarian kitchen, but the recipe was first published in a Texas newspaper in 1958. The dessert is named after the man who invented this particular kind of sweet chocolate for Baker's Chocolate: Sam German. We no longer know the name of the original recipe writer. For more on this topic and recipes, read " German chocolate: It's more than just a cake.

The Teapot: 11/2007

http://designteapot.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Where ideas, thoughts and other tidbits come to steep. Still working on it. This is for Project 6 (the 3-D description). I’m still tweaking it, but let me know what you think. You start down one road only to find it dead ends after hours of work. Now you have valuable time invested here, do you dump it pack up and start over? Or do you salvage what you can, limp along for a while and pray for a spark of ingenuity? The spark appeared before, but will it come again? Dewey vs. Color. I couldn’t resist...

the Salt mine: you're not a genius--it's called photoshop

http://micsalty.blogspot.com/2007/12/youre-not-genius-its-called-photoshop.html

A place for my words and images to hang. 05 December, 2007. You're not a genius- it's called photoshop. PicWash, a web service that allows you to upload your photos and have them professionally retouched within 48 hours is no miracle as NYLON would have you believe. Its called photoshop, people. I actually commend this guy for ripping people off when clearly this kind of work can be done on your own computer with the right technology. Good idea. :). January 2, 2008 at 4:49 PM. A place for my words and images to hang. 25 September, 2007. We are all one. Today, while I was reading for next Saturday's class I came across a sentence that said, "Today writers must think like designers and designers must think like writers." This may sound stupid and obvious but I finally found the point of the pub design program. In this program one of the main questions between students is "are you a writer or a designer? The Teapot: Nothing against it, but . . .

http://designteapot.blogspot.com/2007/12/nothing-against-it-but.html

Where ideas, thoughts and other tidbits come to steep. Nothing against it, but . . . I decided early on that I wanted to get through the semester without posting a link from YouTube on my blog. Nothing against the site, I do flip through it every now and then, I just feel that references to YouTube are everywhere (television news, newspapers, etc) and I wanted to find material someplace else. I made it up to today December 5. Check out Becky’s take on. What is Graphic Design? Tue Dec 11, 11:25:00 PM EST.

The Yard Sale: Warning Label

http://bobsyardsale.blogspot.com/2007/12/warning-label.html

Stuff, insight, ideas, grandstandings, insight, things– CHEAP! Thursday, December 13, 2007. I love warning labels with the small illustration of some poor stick figure getting mangled, killed, smashed, eaten, etc. The Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch picks one out of the thousands, each year, and designates it the Wackiest. I get a kick out of these things. This year's is great, titled "DANGER, AVOID DEATH." Fantastic. Origin: yahoo new 12/13/07). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Customize Your Work Prison.

Stuff, insight, ideas, grandstandings, insight, things– CHEAP! Friday, December 21, 2007. Classic Olde Tyme Typesetting. I found this wanted poster for John Wilkes Booth posted on Wikipedia today. Our predicessors had it much rougher than we. Couple things I've noticed:. The many typefaces used. The large spaces after period marks. Paragraphs are justified (must have been a huge pain to do this by hand). Inconsistent upper case and lower case usage. Tuesday, December 18, 2007. Customize Your Work Prison.
