It's a Jungle in Here: December 2009
http://mergenthalerschmidt.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
It's a Jungle in Here. Experiences in raising my children to be pinko commie tree-hugging bleeding-heart liberals. Catching up: washington vacation. Since we're leaving on Friday to spend Christmas and New Year's in Washington with Greg's family, I thought it was about time I got around to posting about our summer vacation there. And trips to the beach:. I believe that was Evan's first time at the Pacific Ocean.). We went to the Hoh Rainforest. We hiked to Royal Basin. A lake that is only reached after c...

It's a Jungle in Here: friday photos: thanksgiving edition

It's a Jungle in Here. Experiences in raising my children to be pinko commie tree-hugging bleeding-heart liberals. Friday photos: thanksgiving edition. We spent Thanksgiving at my mom's house, as we do every year. Only one of my sisters was able to come, and we had a slightly shorter vacation than usual, due to both of my sons having school on Wednesday, but despite those things we still had a fun long weekend. I am in love with this carousel. The animals are all animals native to New York State, and...

Miller Homestead: April 2013
http://miller-homestead.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 23, 2013. I had a pretty aggressive plan for the orchard planting weekend, but thanks to help from my parents and my wife, we got almost all of it done, if a bit behind schedule. My parents were staying an extra day, so they kindly volunteered to do the transplanting of the final blueberries as well as cover crop seeding on Monday. Hopefully that went ok. I'll be headed back up somewhere around Memorial Day to see what looks alive. At that time I will also put either aluminum window sc...

It's a Jungle in Here: 2012
http://mergenthalerschmidt.blogspot.com/2013/01/2012.html
It's a Jungle in Here. Experiences in raising my children to be pinko commie tree-hugging bleeding-heart liberals. I'm not the resolution type (because I'm terrible at following through and finishing what I start! I'm hoping to go into more details in some future posts, but I'll touch on some of the biggest events of the last year. We took the kids on a weekend vacation to an indoor water park; the kids went white-water rafting for the first time; and Greg and I went to a concert for the first time in ye...

Miller Homestead: Garden Update
http://miller-homestead.blogspot.com/2012/06/garden-update.html
Saturday, June 2, 2012. Here is how the garden looked as of a couple days ago. A few nice looking lettuce patches in serious need of thinning. The results of the thinning.1.5 lbs of good looking young lettuce plants. I started spreading it out about 2" deep. Muffin was supervising. Jaime also joined in on the supervision. It turns out that there is a lot of straw in those bales! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). OPB (Other Peoples' Blogs). Http:/ jaimelyn79.blogspot.com/.

Monday, July 15, 2013. In the pic below, the beans are on the left side, peppers and broccoli front and center, lettuce front right. Garlic and onions are on the right side, brussels sprouts in the center, and potatoes are all you can see in the back. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). OPB (Other Peoples' Blogs). Miller Homestead: August 2011
http://miller-homestead.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 14, 2011. Yet another garden update. A random closeup shot of ripe edamame on the plant. Here are the fall greens that are coming along nicely. There is arugula, lettuce, rapini, and pak choi. They sure are doing a lot better than the same seeds in the spring. Sad looking tomato plants in the topsy-turvy that are somehow producing tomatoes. The first melon. I have high hopes for at least the flavor of these melons if not the quantity. These rainy days have been pretty common lately. In...

Miller Homestead: September 2011
http://miller-homestead.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 25, 2011. Here is my one good melon. Unfortunately I had to pick it before it was 100% ripe. There was a dent in the rind (just above my thumb) that was getting bigger and softer, so I decided to harvest it before it got any worse. Here is what it looks like inside. Not too shabby! On the other hand, the pepper plants are definitely NOT dying back. They are going crazy. Here is one of the bell pepper plants covered in peppers. Monday, September 19, 2011. After being away for a while the...

Miller Homestead: Miller Homestead North
http://miller-homestead.blogspot.com/2013/04/its-been-quite-some-time-since-i-have.html
Tuesday, April 23, 2013. Its been quite some time since I have posted on here, but there has been a recent homesteading development that merits a few posts. Miller homestead is expanding, and there is now a Miller homestead north! The soil is very sandy and acidic (pH was approximately 4.5). The area was fertilized, limed, tilled, and seeded with buckwheat as a cover crop. The buckwheat grew quite well. My mom was checking out the variety of insects attracted to the flowers.
