With the remnants of last weekend's blizzard still in evidence, there's certainly no mistaking the fact that it's still winter, but the days ARE getting longer (I do love it when I start seeing a bit of blue still left in the sky when I leave work at my usual hour of 6, and we are there! Thanks to John at Control Geek. For passing the word word word, word on the bird!

I love to get out and view the natural world whenever I can, I use my blog to document any captured moments and to discuss the things I enjoy. Most of my adventures happen within New York City, and within that, mostly Brooklyn. I am always amazed at what I find, even within the populations of common species! Tuesday, May 28, 2013. Osprey Research - Overview. I began collaborating with Mark Martell on his studies of Osprey migration. A small (and rather expensive) transmitter attached to an Osprey's back enables us to track a bird daily as it migrates. We tagged two Ospreys in 2000, and since then have deployed transmitters on 84 more. Twent...We tagged...

Morningside Hawks: April 2015
http://morningsidehawks.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Reports on hawks and other birds of prey from Morningside Heights and upper Manhattan. 4/26, Morningside Park. Sunday afternoon offered a couple of glimpses of Madeleine the hawk at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, but just glimpses. But again, down the hill in Morningside Park, it was the egret and cormorant show at the pond. The double-crested cormorant was making use of the turtle rock to dry off. And the great egret was lurking in one of the willow trees on the island. 8212; — Edit Post. Minutes...

Reports on hawks and other birds of prey from Morningside Heights and upper Manhattan. 7/24, St. John the Divine. The solo nestling in the hawk nest at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine is getting closer to fledging time, and that means some occasional wing flapping. Friday afternoon, shortly he'd shared a meal with mama, I caught a couple quick bursts. But of course, there's plenty of sky-watching, preening and napping going on. Reports on hawks and other birds of prey from Morningside Heights and upper Manhattan. Manhattan 2015 Nest Checklist Update 3. It's almost July, and Manhattan's baby red-tailed hawks have been fledging from their nests and causing chaos on the local rooftops and in the neighborhood parks. As of this writing, it looks like nine of the ten nests on the "normal" schedule have fledged all their babies. The tenth had just one baby, which died before fledging. Background about the twelve nests can be read here.

Reports on hawks and other birds of prey from Morningside Heights and upper Manhattan. 5/31, J. Hood Wright Park. I checked on the Washington Heights red-tailed hawk nest Sunday afternoon just as the rain started to come down. One baby hawk was up and looking around, but another who was lying down in the corner was looking back. Check the other side to see if the view there is any better. Just a bit, but the rain is getting worse. And time to vacate. Posted 5/31/2015 10:48:00 PM by Robert. 5/23, Baby Haw...

Morningside Hawks: 7/2, St. John the Divine
http://morningsidehawks.blogspot.com/2015/07/72-st-john-divine.html
Reports on hawks and other birds of prey from Morningside Heights and upper Manhattan. 7/2, St. John the Divine. A visit to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine early Thursday eve gave good looks at one nestling in the hawk nest. The young bird looks so big that a couple of us thought it could be two weeks old. That would match better (although not perfectly) with when I thought the second clutch of eggs were laid back in May. Some nicer pictures and video of the scene can be seen on the Urban Hawks blog.
