James Kew: Resident Alien: Lime Ridge 4: Paraiso Trail Loop

http://jameskew.blogspot.com/2005/09/lime-ridge-4-paraiso-trail-loop.html

James Kew: Resident Alien. Brit out of water. Sunday, September 11, 2005. Lime Ridge 4: Paraiso Trail Loop. I’ve been hiking Shell Ridge a lot lately, so yesterday we headed over for a hike in Lime Ridge Open Space. Which turned out to be a lot more exciting than expected. The Windsor herds were semi-domesticated, whereas the deer here are genuinely wild animals. Rattlesnakes, in the flesh, sound. Like they do in the movies. And it’s a surprisingly scary sound, provoking a strong visceral react...We tell...

James Kew: Resident Alien: Redwood Regional Park

http://jameskew.blogspot.com/2005/03/redwood-regional-park.html

James Kew: Resident Alien. Brit out of water. Thursday, March 03, 2005. Walk yesterday, in Redwood Regional Park. Mdash; one of the string of parks in the Berkeley hills which include Wildcat, Tilden. Sibley, and Huckleberry. The forest was logged clean in the 1840s–1860s, leaving a sea of stumps. Malcolm Margolin, in The East Bay Out. We both really enjoyed this hike, but really wanted more of it to be in the forest and less of it on the hillsides; next time we might extend it by taking the French Trail...

James Kew: Resident Alien: Two monkeys

http://jameskew.blogspot.com/2006/02/two-monkeys.html

James Kew: Resident Alien. Brit out of water. Sunday, February 26, 2006. Is a much better monkey movie than King Kong. George: playful, innocent, sweet, short; full of the joy of life; and unashamedly for kids, with no ironic in-jokes winking and mugging at adults. (There is, however, one “you go, girlfriend” which. Feels stale and which won’t age well.). Go see George: it’ll make you feel good about life. Oh, and Ebert and Roeper. Where’s your sense of. Add a comment. Walnut Creek, California.

James Kew: Resident Alien: Shell Ridge Loop

http://jameskew.blogspot.com/2006/02/shell-ridge-loop.html

James Kew: Resident Alien. Brit out of water. Sunday, February 05, 2006. No car yesterday; it’s in the shop until Monday. So, a circular hike from the apartment; a shortened, and reversed, version of a loop hike. I did last August. We start at Howe Homestead Park, on the edge of Shell Ridge Open Space. Climbing up on the Kovar Trail, and higher onto the Summit Ridge Trail, the views back over downtown Walnut Creek soon open up. March 26, 2006 5:53 AM permanent link. Saturday, December 23, 2006. Scripting News: What to do? Three 3.5 magnitude earthquakes. In Berkeley in the last 3 days. We got a light rattling here, but Dave Winer’s on-the-spot description. Is a lot more evocative: “felt like a truck hitting the house […] quick but loud.” (But at the risk of sounding callous: if you hate quakes so much, why buy a house so close to the Hayward Fault? James Kew: Linkblog: Workbench: Finding Good Soundbites in Bad Podcasts

http://jameskewlinks.blogspot.com/2006/08/workbench-finding-good-soundbites-in.html

Friday, August 18, 2006. Workbench: Finding Good Soundbites in Bad Podcasts. Rogers neatly sums up. Why I dislike podcasts: “Content that sucks in two dimensions. A bad podcast suffers both in quality and in the amount of time required to find this out. I could’ve back-buttoned 60 bad blog entries in the time I listened to one Gillmor Gang.” The comments and correction also identify another problem: sometimes it's hard to tell who’s speaking. Monday, September 04, 2006. SFGate.com: New Stamps Misspell 'Motorcycle'. USPS finds a typo in a first-day cover postmark. Index cards are so last century. Sunday, January 18, 2009. Dead easy. Best fresh; they don't keep long or well. 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour. 1 tbsp double-acting baking powder (they're pretty much all double-acting these days, apparently). 1 tbsp sugar; could probably use less. Frac12; tsp baking soda. 4 tbsp cold unsalted butter cut into ¼-inch cubes. 1½ cups cold buttermilk, preferably low-fat. Approx 1 cup flour spread over a rimmed baking sheet. Preheat oven to 500°F. From The Amateur Gourmet.
