Stealing from the poor | Ex-Ex-Pat

https://janebsinger.wordpress.com/2010/12/22/stealing-from-the-poor

Coming (back) to America. Stealing from the poor. December 22, 2010 in Good and Bad: Britain. I like to put out a little holiday present for the guys who collect the recycling and refuse each week. And this year, I picked up a couple of cheery boxes of chocolates. i just set them on top of the bins with a card, and it’s always nice when the guys smile in surprise and wave up at the house when they spy them. (The house waves back.). Because the nasty little yob. Good and Bad: Britain. Good and Bad: Iowa.

Wheelie bins | Ex-Ex-Pat

Coming (back) to America. September 26, 2010 in Brits and Yanks. Good and Bad: Britain. The Iowa City Council recently provided each household in my neighborhood with a shiny and really quite spiffy version of what the Brits call a ‘ wheelie bin. 8217; This is a large but easily maneuverable trash container, with wheels and a hinged lid, to make curbside pickup easier every week. Yes, UK readers, that’s correct: every week. The recycling gets picked up weekly, too. Good and Bad: Britain. U of Iowa, USA.

Multicultural? | Ex-Ex-Pat

Coming (back) to America. September 3, 2010 in Brits and Yanks. Good and Bad: Britain. Watching television the other night, I was struck by how ordinary it has become to see portrayals of multi-racial social groups — not just in entertainment and other programming but also, quite pervasively, in the commercials. Perhaps these commercials are so striking because I cannot recall ever seeing such an ‘advert’ in England. That’s not to say there aren’t any, but … well, none c...More than 92 percent of the pop...

I Gotta Feeling | Ex-Ex-Pat

https://janebsinger.wordpress.com/2010/12/31/i-gotta-feeling

Coming (back) to America. December 31, 2010 in Good and Bad: Britain. On New Year’s Eve, from a frigid Waterloo Bridge in the heart of London, I said my good-bye to England. Along with 200,000 other shivering revelers on both sides of (and above) the Thames, I tried to stay warm by jumping up and down to the bouncy Black Eyed Peas tune. Fireworks over the Thames (Photo, J.B. Singer). And the fireworks burst gloriously from the London Eye, dancing and sparkling, lighting up the famous riverfront and all o...

Minding the media | Ex-Ex-Pat

https://janebsinger.wordpress.com/2011/01/23/minding-the-media

Coming (back) to America. January 23, 2011 in Good and Bad: Britain. For the past 12 months, I have been writing about living as an American in Britain — and about living again in America afterwards. I have now been back in Iowa for a year, though, and this seems a good time to shift the focus. This weekend, I went to see The King’s Speech. A wonderful movie about how a young prince named Bertie unexpectedly became King George VI. Is in decline in Britain as elsewhere, it remains among the highest. After...

Crafty Lenk: How will I ever find time???

http://craftylenk.blogspot.com/2014/01/how-will-i-ever-find-time.html

Wednesday, January 15, 2014. How will I ever find time? I'm using the Attic Windows setting. This photo doesn't really do justice to the block, but I think the finished product will be really nice. Sure hope she likes it! Annnndd, I'm even thinking ahead to the next quilt after the baby quilt! A great nephew is in the Air Force and I think it's time I make a quilt for him and his wife. I'm tossing around patterns - flying geese (to honor his service)? Yesterday was another followup visit with the medical...

Crafty Lenk: October 2011

http://craftylenk.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 17, 2011. It turned out really nice, don't you think? The quilt is not the only thing that has taken up my time. I mentioned earlier this summer that I was working on a surprise for a friend. I gave this witch wall hanging to a fellow SWAN who very nicely gave me a quilt hanger. I felt moved to make something for her. Here it is the way she has it hanging in her house. The one I made is on the left and seems to go quite well with the other door decoration she uses. So, now you're up to da...

Crafty Lenk: July 2011

http://craftylenk.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 28, 2011. Back in the Groove. I thought you might also want to see the fabrics that I'll be using for the borders and the backing. I'll use either the yellow or the green for the second border and the other one will be used for the backing. My next task will be to decide which one to use for the binding. Fortunately, that won't be an issue for a while. But maybe I'll take a nap first. Links to this post. Sunday, July 24, 2011. What do I do? The pattern I'm testing is English paper piecing ...

Crafty Lenk: September 2010

http://craftylenk.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 5, 2010. Motivation.or the lack thereof. Where have I been recently? A long time ago, I realized that I can't start a new project until the one I am currently working on is finished (or I acknowledge that I have lost interest in it and put it away for a future time). This quilt is about 2/3 finished so I don't know why I can't seem to focus on finishing it. Anybody have suggestions? Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Deana's Fabrics and Fibers. Crafty Lenk: October 2013

http://craftylenk.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 15, 2013. Where has the year gone? Heaven help us if the day arrives when I can't do some kind of needlework! My stitch group has an ornament exchange each year at Halloween and Christmas. I didn't participate in the Halloween swap last year, but I did for Christmas. The ornament I made is on the left. Sarah drew the short straw and was the recipient of my ornament. Teresa made the one on the right and I was fortunate enough to draw hers. Isn't it lovely? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Crafty Lenk: July 2010

http://craftylenk.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 12, 2010. Quilting bee. That phrase conjures up an image of several women sitting around a quilt and adding their stitches to make a finished product. The frame is usually set up in one of the women's living room (parlor? No matter the shape of the conversation on any given evening, we do visit with each other - a lot! Crafty Lenk: It's Finished!

http://craftylenk.blogspot.com/2014/04/its-finished.html

Wednesday, April 9, 2014. I have finally finished the quilt I was making for my niece. In an earlier post, I said I was using the Attic Windows block using heart blocks left over from an anniversary quilt as the focal point in the block. I even posted a photo of a block. Well, here is a photo of the finished item:. It actually does kind of look like a window - if you squint your eyes and move back as far as possible. :-). I like fabrics from the 1930's so that's what I'm using. Since it's for a boy, ...

Ex-Ex-Pat | Coming (back) to America

Coming (back) to America. February 28, 2011 in Neither Here nor There. Can one kitten, weighing well under 10 pounds, open a full-sized refrigerator door all by himself? Yes, with sufficient motivation. Even a relatively new refrigerator with reasonably tight vacuum-sealed doors? What kind of motivation would something like that take? A salmon steak defrosting inside. Especially if he saw Mom putting it there. What will he do once he gets inside and the door closes? Can he get out again? Won’t he be cold?
