https://theboolion.wordpress.com/2013/02/16/home-deconstruction-for-my-anniversary
Discovering cocktails and mixed drinks. Home Deconstruction for My Anniversary. February 16, 2013. Happy Birthday to me! The Boo Lion turned one last week, so I decided to get busy with the power tools and do a little deconstruction work. Thanks a lot guys! Anyway, after a year it’s about time to pull out the power tools in service of mixology. Last week, I blogged about Negronis. I left out one of the most fun – the Deconstructed Negroni. Recommends using a sturdy wide mixing glass, and rubbing a small ...

Americano, Negroni, Sbagliato! | The Boo Lion
https://theboolion.wordpress.com/2013/02/08/americano-negroni-sbagliato
Discovering cocktails and mixed drinks. Americano, Negroni, Sbagliato! February 8, 2013. This post is mostly about the Negroni, but I’m going to start with an Italian lesson. An Americano is a drink made with bitters (Campari), vermouth and soda. According to most sources it got its name around about the 1890s because of all the American tourists drinking it. I call bullshit. Were there loads of American tourists in Italy in the 1890s? Did they then choose to drink strange bitter European liqueurs? The A...

https://theboolion.wordpress.com/2012/03/10/got-bitters
Discovering cocktails and mixed drinks. March 10, 2012. Just a quick news post for people in Taipei. Bitters have arrived! And then I was in the Breeze Supermarket. Today and saw that they have the whole range of Fees Brothers Bitters! Also lists Cherry Bitters and Grapefruit Bitters so it might have been those. There should be one more though. Possibly Coffee Bitters. Also, on a tip from a fellow drinker at my local, The Green Hornet. Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Posted in Taipei Boozehunting.

MxMo: The Harvey Cherrybanger | The Boo Lion
https://theboolion.wordpress.com/2013/03/17/mxmo-the-harvey-cherrybanger
Discovering cocktails and mixed drinks. MxMo: The Harvey Cherrybanger. March 17, 2013. It’s Mixology Monday. Again, and this month those who like to blog about ‘craft cocktails’ are taking on the very ingredients that the new cocktail movement was a rebellion against. Scott Diaz at Shake, Strain and Sip. Is the host this week, and he outlines the challenge thus:. And a bit of Fees Brothers Rhubarb Bitters. A flavour that I am very fond of. The resulting cocktail was good, but then I remembered thinki...

Boozehound (Book Review) | The Boo Lion
https://theboolion.wordpress.com/2012/04/24/boozehound-book-review
Discovering cocktails and mixed drinks. April 24, 2012. 8216;Boozehound: On the Trail of the Rare, the Obscure, and the Overrated in Spirits’. Is a great book by Jason Wilson, spirits columnist for the Washington Post. You can read some of his columns here. They’re pretty good. Excellent in fact. But the book is much better. I’d go so far as to call it my favourite cocktail/spirits book. It’s like travel writing for booze. Wilson is self-effacingly modest and very funny. He somehow manages to take hi...

How’s Your Drink? (Book Review) | The Boo Lion
https://theboolion.wordpress.com/2012/06/08/hows-your-drink-book-review
Discovering cocktails and mixed drinks. How’s Your Drink? June 8, 2012. My first book review, ‘Boozehound’. Was cocktail travelogue. The last one, ‘Imbibe’. Was cocktail history and archaeology. ‘How’s Your Drink’. 8211; a reworking of author Eric Felten’s former cocktail columns for the Wall Street Journal. 8211; is a marvellous piece of cocktail cultural and literary studies. And his rhapsodic writing about his favourite bar, Blair’s Blue Room, really makes me want to go there. Where is it? Click to sh...

Cynar for my Valentine! | The Boo Lion
https://theboolion.wordpress.com/2012/02/14/cynar-for-my-valentine
Discovering cocktails and mixed drinks. Cynar for my Valentine! February 14, 2012. It’s Valentine’s Day so I need to make something romantic, and nothing says Valentine’s Day like artichoke hearts. Er, let’s that again. Nothing says Valentine’s Day like an obscure, bitter, mud-brown, digestive aid. Um, Nothing says Valentine’s Day like a fine Italian liqueur. Oh, and hearts equals Valentine’s, right? Naturally I approached it with some trepidation. The first sip, from the bottle didn’t leave mu...Bitter,...
