Jeremy Stoppelman's Blog: Book Report: The Rise and Decline of Nations

http://jeremy.stoppelman.com/2009/04/book-report-rise-and-decline-of-nations.html

Sunday, April 12, 2009. Book Report: The Rise and Decline of Nations. Finally finished this one, eek that took a while. Rise and Decline of Nations. Was dry as matzoh, but it did leave me with some ideas to chew on. One key takeaway for me was when Olson explained why consumers (like you and me) don't defend themselves against these groups. Olson provides 9 implications of having special interest groups operate in a stable society over time (paraphrased more or less here): . 7 Groups slow down socie...

http://jeremy.stoppelman.com/2009/02/book-report-whatever-it-takes.html

Sunday, February 15, 2009. Book Report: Whatever it Takes. In these morose times it's refreshing to hear about something that could have a huge positive impact on society. I was pointed to Whatever it Takes. 160;by a NYTimes Magazine piece entitled "The Big Fix". I've long been interested in our country's education challenges, but I'm an armchair quarterback on the issues and have little direct experience with the problems faced in America's schools. I do know a few TFA. View my complete profile. Book Re...

reveries of a daydream believer: July 2006

http://roshnir.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html

Reveries of a daydream believer. Saturday, July 29, 2006. My mom and i just made some killer hummous. In a blender we added:. 1 whole headed of garlic (peeled). The juice one one large fresh lemon. 1 can of garbanzo beans. 3 tbsp tahini (sesame butter). And then just blended for a few minutes, and damn did it turn out goooooood! Mind you, the whole head of garlic is a bit much. i *looove* garlic, but for those who fear dragon breath, that's definitely an ingredient that can be cut down upon.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained: Leaders Can Fall Fast on the Internet

http://nothingventurednothinggained.blogspot.com/2009/07/leaders-can-fall-fast-on-internet.html

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thoughts on novel businesses, inspiring entrepreneurs and venture capital. Wednesday, July 15, 2009. Leaders Can Fall Fast on the Internet. Just a few years ago, the industry-leading incumbent in the Internet local search category was IAC's. Com It had an apparently unassailable position in local search with no meaningful competition. Well, times have changed. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsome. Im trying to get the word out to VCs like you, about a new website called Con...

Nothing ventured, nothing gained: A belated thank you

http://nothingventurednothinggained.blogspot.com/2010/08/belated-thank-you.html

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thoughts on novel businesses, inspiring entrepreneurs and venture capital. Thursday, August 26, 2010. A belated thank you. When I started leading venture capital investments for Bessemer. And Gerson Lehrman Group. Those worked out well and helped to increase my confidence. I helped Fabrice Grinda. Get started with OLX. In early 2006, and after he brought on co-founder Alec Oxenford, I led the Series A financing with General Catalyst's Joel Cutler. Until recently. The...

Nothing ventured, nothing gained: World's Greatest Cloud Service Provider

http://nothingventurednothinggained.blogspot.com/2010/04/worlds-greatest-cloud-service-provider.html

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thoughts on novel businesses, inspiring entrepreneurs and venture capital. Tuesday, April 20, 2010. World's Greatest Cloud Service Provider. Along with several of my colleagues, I am particularly attracted to our cloud computing roadmap. And I spend a fair amount of time exploring related ideas and companies. It came as a bit of a surprise to find that the world's greatest cloud service provider was a virtual unknown just a week ago:. Credit to my friends at Parallels.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained: Portfolio Company Politics

http://nothingventurednothinggained.blogspot.com/2008/10/portfolio-company-politics.html

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thoughts on novel businesses, inspiring entrepreneurs and venture capital. Wednesday, October 01, 2008. I got nervous today when I heard one of my consumer internet. Portfolio companies had posted a political advertisement on YouTube. It seemed obvious to me that any consumer company is likely to alienate half of its customer base by making a political statement. No matter how well-executed the ad, it is guaranteed to hurt business as much as it helps.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained: There's an App For That (on your TV)

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thoughts on novel businesses, inspiring entrepreneurs and venture capital. Thursday, August 12, 2010. There's an App For That (on your TV). Ever since the initial iPhone release in 2007, I assumed Apple would eventually extend its consumer device operating system to televisions. Benchmark's Bill Gurley. Predicted it here and even included a nice living room mockup. To date, Apple has only delivered a mediocre tv. Attachment called Apple TV. Is sponsoring a contest. The m...

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thoughts on novel businesses, inspiring entrepreneurs and venture capital. Sunday, November 02, 2008. Humor without the lies, please. I admit that I'm a frequent reader of Valleywag. A low-brow blog full of silicon valley gossip.  It's often pretty funny, and I know many of the people referenced in the stories, which only adds to the entertainment value. A few months after we invested in his company, Jimmy transitioned from CEO to full-time executive Chairman, and he and...

http://nothingventurednothinggained.blogspot.com/2008/09/oh-my-goldman.html

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thoughts on novel businesses, inspiring entrepreneurs and venture capital. Thursday, September 18, 2008. I got a first-hand sense of how badly Goldman Sachs felt the pressure of the crumbling financial markets this morning.   . The caller turned out to be his broker from Goldman Sachs who was calling to relay a simple message: If Goldman goes under, don't worry, your assets will still be safe. http://nothingventurednothinggained.blogspot.com/2007/10/he-has-no-credibiltiy-but-i-think-hes.html

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thoughts on novel businesses, inspiring entrepreneurs and venture capital. Monday, October 22, 2007. He has no credibility, but I think he's 100% correct. For several months now, I have been privately telling anyone willing to listen that search advertising, though incredibly effective, is over rated. At first glance, it would appear that advertising to someone in context. Rather than a link to Apex. For starters, you have heard of Samsung but you've probably never heard...

Nothing ventured, nothing gained: The NY Times Says Yelp has Arrived

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thoughts on novel businesses, inspiring entrepreneurs and venture capital. Tuesday, November 04, 2008. The NY Times Says Yelp has Arrived. It's not often that the venerable New York Times publishes a glowing piece. On one of my portfolio companies. This is a welcome bit of good cheer amidst the backdrop of a generally gloomy economy.  When I invested in the young company founded by Jeremy S. The courageous Megan C. Now that's what I call broad coverage. March 9, 2009.
