It works. Research shows that about 80% of mediations achieve a settlement on the day. More settle shortly after. It's cheap - compared to the costs of litigation. Because of the speed the costs are relatively small and fixed. It's confidential-nothing that is said can be used in subsequent court proceedings if settlement is not reached.
