Learning to See

The ongoing project of teaching my eyes to see in terms of paint. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. This last paint-out was a good education. There were some REALLY good painters there who have been to workshops with REALLY, REALLY good painters.Paint-outs are worth going to for that reason alone: you can see that knowledge applied and painters happily share what they learn at workshops. Here's some of what struck me as valuable:. 3 Free vs. loose. Loose implies something that SHOULD be tight is coming un-glued.

Learning to See: July 2015

http://www.jtpart.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Friday, July 31, 2015. This is the entrance to the rock garden at Bentonsport. First I'll list what went right (or so I think). You're probably going to have to click or pinch this image bigger. 1 The photo makes clear that all the greens in the vicinity were nearly identical. I saw the background trees were darker and bluer when I focused on the shrub by the wall and saw them in my peripheral vision. 3 I bumped up the pink flowers because they relieve all that green with their complimentary hue. 3 The g...

Learning to See: This the season

http://www.jtpart.blogspot.com/2015/07/this-season.html

Sunday, July 26, 2015. The lighting was caused by the rising sun slicing between the bell tower and the sanctuary. The beautiful wedge of red orange lasted about 15 minutes tops, so I drew in the wedge shape and put a spot of the color on it serve as a reminder. Here it is almost done (above) and in the show (below). Hanging above it is John Evans' pastel which took second. That afternoon I did this more typical subject. Here are the artists and a shot of the pieces in the final show.

Learning to See: Day 2 at Mineral Point

http://www.jtpart.blogspot.com/2015/08/day-2-at-mineral-point.html

Thursday, August 6, 2015. Day 2 at Mineral Point. Another pleasant day in the 80's.today I decided to try stuff out of my usual ourvre (always use French to make things more special than they really are! Turned the corner and saw this lovely porch. Had a bit of trouble as the light moved diagonally across it but used a combo of shadows painted in at the start, memory and imagination. To keep it edgy and not too sweet I included the waste bin and trash bag (that's not French.that's just BS! Subscribe to: ...

Tried to adjust the second painting from my Village Folk School Workshop in Bentonsport. The focus of the day was dark and light shapes. For our project in Painting I we took a complex scene or a person and initially did black and white acrylic. The art term for this is called Grisaille. it can remain in neutrals or be used as an underpainting. My approach was as an underpainting. So below, I have the initial black and white and the finished color version. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.
