Dr Graham’s Homes. Many Kalimpong emigrants arrived in the late 1920s when the economic downturn was beginning to affect employment. The Kalimpong women who worked as domestic helps for quite well-to-do families were protected to some extent; however many of the boys joined the ranks of itinerant labourers moving around rural areas looking for work. By 1931, unemployment meant that New Zealand no longer permitted entry to the Kalimpong emigrants. Lsquo;Ghorkaland’ Movement. St Andrews Colonial Homes opens.
