Karen Kaye in South Africa

Karen Kaye in South Africa. Saturday, August 27, 2011. So, what happened? The rest of the story. Thank you all for following along on my Peace Corps South Africa experience. I have returned to the United States of America and am home now. Although I nearly completed my 27-month commitment, I left South Africa and my Peace Corps assignment abruptly in June, 2011—3 months shy of my “close of service” date. Many of you are asking why I left early and suddenly. Thanks for following along! Like many, I was en...

Karen Kaye in South Africa: Health Symposium, Spider bites, and sight-seeing in Pretoria

http://karenkaye789.blogspot.com/2011/04/health-symposium-spider-bites-and-sight.html

Karen Kaye in South Africa. Saturday, April 16, 2011. Health Symposium, Spider bites, and sight-seeing in Pretoria. 65279;. Union Buildings in Pretoria. 65279; . Peace Corps provides its in-country volunteers with training opportunities throughout a volunteer’s service. For example, we’re provided six weeks of training when we first arrive in-country to prepare us for living in a new country with a new language, a new culture, and (usually) new work assignments. But it was worth it! Rebecca and I...

Karen Kaye in South Africa: A day alone with the trees

http://karenkaye789.blogspot.com/2010/06/day-alone-with-trees.html

Karen Kaye in South Africa. Friday, June 25, 2010. A day alone with the trees. On my second day in Messina, I arranged for a rental car so that I could visit the baobabs and take all the time I needed to be with the trees, and that’s what I did: I spent all day walking among and sitting with these wise old trees. It was a beautiful, gorgeous day, sunny and warm with the clouds darkening, at times, just enough to make a fine texture in the sky. It was the favorite of my trip.). Isn’t he magnificent? I don...

Karen Kaye in South Africa: Falling in love in Africa!

http://karenkaye789.blogspot.com/2010/12/falling-in-love-in-africa.html

Karen Kaye in South Africa. Friday, December 10, 2010. Falling in love in Africa! Yes, it’s true! I’ve fallen in love in Africa, fallen absolutely, positively, head-over-heels in love in Africa! I’ve fallen in love with my South African community, my South African schools, my South African church, and my South African village! I’ve even fallen in love with the people who work in my area of the taxi rank, who I’ve come to rely upon to take care of me (and they DO! Is this our Karen Kaye? 8221; Your pushin...

Karen Kaye in South Africa: Amended New Year’s Resolution: or, Falling in love in Africa, Part Two!

http://karenkaye789.blogspot.com/2011/01/amended-new-years-resolution-or-falling.html

Karen Kaye in South Africa. Sunday, January 2, 2011. Amended New Year’s Resolution: or, Falling in love in Africa, Part Two! Hiking over the forests and winelands of Constantia. I'm told that Constantia is home to the "oldest winelands in the Cape.". 8220;This is a good sign, having a broken heart. It means we have tried for something.”. As (re)told by Elizabeth Gilbert. I think I made it to the third week of January for NO WORK ON SUNDAY and the complaining, I’m sorry to say, resumed even earlier! In he...

Karen Kaye in South Africa: Willfulness

http://karenkaye789.blogspot.com/2010/09/willfulness.html

Karen Kaye in South Africa. Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Family members loaned me money to buy my first car when I was fifteen years old. Mercifully, I was not to know that I would live in debt for the next twenty something years- most of my adult life. I had department store credit cards at eighteen with MasterCard and Visa accounts soon to follow. Later, I would cripple myself with student loans. In 2006, for the first time in my adult life, I became debt-free. And how glorious it was! In the States, ...

Peace Corps South Africa!: October 2009

http://thosecrazykidz.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Peace Corps South Africa! Andy and Lauren talk about feelings. Wednesday, October 21, 2009. If you hate the tweets, give up now; else, read on. Remember the landing scene in Serenity? That's what it's like to ride the bus down a dirt road in rural South Africa. I swear to God, a first grader who barely speaks English just used the phrase, "2D object". Math class was a lesson on collecting poll data, but it just descended into a debate on which animal is best. (ans: leopard). Writing a blog about Twitter.

Peace Corps South Africa! Andy and Lauren talk about feelings. Tuesday, September 29, 2009. The Owl and the Pussycat(s) (Andy). Some stories about some encounters I've had with some animals of some country called South Africa. During our free time, we made our way over to the tower, which I estimate was about 100 yards high. One by one, people climbed to the top and telled down, "You absolutely have to. I'd decided that if by the time I got to the tower, if there were people there, I would climb it. ...

Peace Corps South Africa!: January 2010

http://thosecrazykidz.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Peace Corps South Africa! Andy and Lauren talk about feelings. Saturday, January 16, 2010. I have inconveniently long femurs and other things I've learned from Peace Corps. The obvious first thing I've learned is that I'm not a blogger by nature. I've just been so busy having my life-changing experiences, you know? Things I learned in November:. Transitions are hard. Okay, maybe this is more like a re-learn, but it always feels like the first time. Church is fun and you can sing whenever you want to.

Peace Corps South Africa! Andy and Lauren talk about feelings. Tuesday, August 25, 2009. What South Africa Thinks of the US (and other weird things). Let me preface this entry by saying that this is definitely from my very limited perspective and is mainly absorbed through pop culture. Otherwise known as “America”. It’s of no use to explain that there are several Americas which are also continents. To say that Brazil is also in an America is absolutely absurd. Seemingly not that interesting in terms of n...

Karen Kaye & Film: James Cameron’s Avatar, 2009

http://karenkayefilm.blogspot.com/2011/05/james-camerons-avatar-2009.html

Karen Kaye and Film. Monday, 16 May 2011. James Cameron’s Avatar, 2009. Ok, ok, I’ve only now seen James Cameron’s 2009 film, Avatar. And the short of it— I loved it! Then Cameron, more often than not, delivers! Is another telling of the Pocahontas/John Smith story whereby an outsider comes into an indigenous culture and brings along a whole slew of incoming imperialists to harvest all the available riches and throw the indigenous ways of life into ruin. Cameron’s computer generated film is gorgeous.

Life in the SA: A dollar a day keeps higher education deprivation away

http://zitakang.blogspot.com/2010/02/dollar-day-keeps-higher-education.html

Life in the SA. Monday, February 22, 2010. A dollar a day keeps higher education deprivation away. This weekend I did my very first half-marathon thanks to Denise! She told me about the Pirates half-marathon and I invited myself. I’ve never done one before, and I thought it’d be a good kick start to my weight loss plan. I hadn’t really trained (Two 30-minute runs in total to be exact) and clearly had no idea what I was getting myself into. You can donate one of two ways:. 2 Add a sticky note declaring wh...

Peace Corps South Africa! Andy and Lauren talk about feelings. Wednesday, May 5, 2010. My Perfect Peace Corps Day. My perfect day started at 7:40 when my cell phone alarm went off. Note that my morning gets to start a little later. I don't have to teach until 9, so I like to sleep in a little. One of the very nice things about being a volunteer is setting your own schedule. Next, I went to talk to the HOD (head of department-a vice principal of sorts) about a letter she wanted help on her English with an...

Last night I was cast last minute to pose as a nude statue at Pageant of the Masters. In Laguna Beach, CA, where classic works of art are recreated using live models. When I arrived, they showed me my costume. It was a g-string and a wrist cuff that was used to tether my wrist to the stand I was posed against. The remainder of my costume was a bucket of bronze paint. Obviously, I...

Karen Kaye & Film

Karen Kaye and Film. Thursday, 19 May 2011. Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona, 2008. Movie poster courtesy of Media Pro/Wild Bunch Studio. Seeing Woody Allen’s 2005 film, Match Point. Which I felt sure a masterpiece, I’ve become a reluctant fan of Mr. Allen. I’ve tried to be a fan before, but, well, there was that off-putting scandal in his personal life and I’ve often felt I just didn’t “get” his movies. However, I’m impressed with and enjoyed Vicky Christina Barcelona. In Vicky Christina Barcelona.
