On May 7, 1945 Doenitz sent General Alfred Jodl, Chief of the Operations Staff of the Armed Forces High Command (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht) to General Eisenhower's headquarters in Rheims to officially surrender. All hostilities ceased as of 2300 hrs on May 8, 1945. Karl Doenitz remained head of state until May 23, 1945, when he was arrested at his government headquarters located inside the naval cadet school in Mürwik near Flensburg. Following his death on December 24, 1980, Karl Doenitz was laid to rest next to his wife Ingeborg who passed away in May 1962. Also present at the gravesite is a marker honoring the Doenitz s two sons who were killed in action during WWII. Peter was killed in May of 1943 while serving on U-954. And Klaus was killed in May 1944 while serving on the German Schnell Boat S-141. The Aumuehler church next to the cemetery. The sign at the cemetery entrance. Photos of the Doenitz family plot.

Grossadmiral Karl Doenitz had served in U-boats during World War I and remained in the German Navy after his release from a British POW camp. When Germany began to rebuild their U-boat fleet, Doenitz was chosen to organize the new U-boat service, and became Chief of U-boat Forces.
