Karpathos has some spectacular scenery, particularly in the middle of the island.Olympos itself is in a rather barren, inhospitable part of the island and when I visited the island in April 1997 there still wasn't an asphalt road linking it to the south of the island. The people of northern Karpathos are different from those in the south and their dialect retains many words and expressions from the Doric age (3000 years ago).
