This was the culmination of a long project working closely with every school pupil to develop drawings that illustrated the story of the school over 100 years of history in the town. Drawings were produced in workshops and carefully traced to produce templates for the steel panels to be cut. The steel was powder coated with black paint to excenuate the drawn works. Over several weeks the participants made designs using a collage of photographs of themselves in Mardi Gras masks that they had made. We were thinking about the way snowflakes fall down to the ground and the similarity to little feathers. This year we aimed to push the compressed snow to it's limits, carving it as thin as we dared. In some places you could see light through it. We were helped by the weather, which got colder and colder over the 3 days it took to make this, making the snow harder and stronger. We squelched through the huge amount of mud and pond-like puddles with the usual warnings about not messing about, watching your step etc. You can see what's coming, really.
