Wrapped Up In Books: July 2006
http://tomsbookreviews.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html
Wrapped Up In Books. My musings on what I've read since January 2006. Monday, July 31, 2006. Jane Eyre Charlotte Bronte. This is wonderful stuff, of course, just about peerless as a story of love obstructed by social pressures. Everybody should read it. Posted by Tom Goodfellow @ 11:08 PM. Sunday, July 23, 2006. The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck. The surprising thing is that it’s still so popular in the USA when it’s explicitly a socialist polemic. Isn’t socialism a dirty word in Bush’s America? This mo...

Wrapped Up In Books: The Sixteen Satires - Juvenal
http://tomsbookreviews.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-sixteen-satires-juvenal.html
Wrapped Up In Books. My musings on what I've read since January 2006. Wednesday, September 26, 2012. The Sixteen Satires - Juvenal. I confess I was often hopelessly lost in the blizzard of classical allusion contained in these outrageous Roman polemics against the rich, the poor, the powerful, the powerless and (particularly) women. One has to be impressed by the sheer energetic bravado of much of it, though. Posted by Tom Goodfellow @ 6:04 PM. Wrapped Up In Books. Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Wrapped Up In Books. My musings on what I've read since January 2006. Thursday, December 28, 2006. Slow Man - J.M.Coetzee. Despite the narrative failure of the earlier book. A lively and thought-provoking read. Posted by Tom Goodfellow @ 12:14 PM. I Married A Communist. Or The Canterbury Tales. It takes a great author to make it work this well, and Roth is certainly that. Posted by Tom Goodfellow @ 12:56 AM. Sunday, December 17, 2006. The Nun - Denis Diderot. The blurb on this 18th century classic promis...

Wrapped Up In Books. My musings on what I've read since January 2006. Tuesday, November 28, 2006. The Floating Brothel - Sian Rees. This history book combines an old interest of mine with a comparatively new one - late 18th century London and the early history of Sydney. It details the journey of a group of women from Newgate gaol to the new outpost of New South Wales. Posted by Tom Goodfellow @ 8:42 PM. Sunday, November 26, 2006. Riders of the Purple Sage - Zane Grey. Sadly, the book is a bit of a trial...

Wrapped Up In Books. My musings on what I've read since January 2006. Tuesday, October 31, 2006. God Bless You, Mr Rosewater Kurt Vonnegut. I was also touched by Eliot’s impromptu secular rite of baptism:. Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies-:. God damn it, you’ve got to be kind. Posted by Tom Goodfellow @ 9:05 PM. It’s a s...

Wrapped Up In Books. My musings on what I've read since January 2006. Thursday, May 25, 2006. Invasion of the Body Snatchers Jack Finney. Like most people, I was more aware of this story from the film version than the book, specifically the classic 1956 movie. You're next, You're next. Posted by Tom Goodfellow @ 5:13 PM. Wrapped Up In Books. My musings on what I've read since January 2006. Wednesday, January 31, 2007. The Lunar Men Jenny Uglow. This is a long and detailed account of a group of friends in the 18. There is a sense of sadness towards the end of the book as mortality begins to take its toll alongside the turbulent repercussions of the French Revolution, but the overriding feeling is of admiration for these remarkable gentlemen and their manifold achievements. Wrapped Up In Books. My musings on what I've read since January 2006. Sunday, February 25, 2007. Blockbuster, or How Hollywood Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Summer Tom Shone. A well-written, sloppily edited overview of 1980s. From Jaws to The Fellowship of the Ring. In part this is a riposte to Peter Biskind’s brilliant Easy Riders, Raging Bulls. Nevertheless, Shone keeps things lively and demonstrates a talent for the witty one-liner that. Had me joyfully spluttering through my popcorn . Money s...

Wrapped Up In Books: The Thought Gang – Tibor Fischer

Wrapped Up In Books. My musings on what I've read since January 2006. Wednesday, September 19, 2012. The Thought Gang Tibor Fischer. In which archly over-elaborate language is used to describe the antics of the titular criminals who combine philosophy with bank heists. The two strands never quite come together satisfactorily, Nietzsche moustaches being used as disguises notwithstanding. It’s also way too long, despite things picking up a tad towards the finale.
