A Freshwater Journey from Maine to Montana: Day 12 - Bemidji

http://waldentowobegon.blogspot.com/2009/06/10-fri-concordia-language-village.html

Thursday, July 9, 2009. Day 12 - Bemidji. One would think that after eleven days on the road, and having arrived in the security of my old hometown, that I would sleep in fairly late. Not so. I woke at 5:00 AM, just in time for a crisp clear sunrise, which I documented with a series of three photos. Sunrise of July 10, beginning at 5:30 AM local time from the front yard of my parents Cabin at the end of Walleye Drive at Lake Plantagenet, Minnesota. Gackle family cabin shares a lawn with that of my parents.

A Freshwater Journey from Maine to Montana: Day 14 - Lake Plantagenet

http://waldentowobegon.blogspot.com/2009/06/12-sun-family-reunion-union-lake.html

Saturday, July 11, 2009. Day 14 - Lake Plantagenet. It was a beautiful morning, perfect for the central Saturday of a weekend family reunion. Group photo with a few people missing. Though I had initially planned to take the entire day off, I couldn’t resist a short trip over to the public boat dock on the other side of the lake, where the big boat was being put into the water. A Freshwater Journey from Maine to Montana: Day 17 - Continental Divide

http://waldentowobegon.blogspot.com/2009/07/day-17-across-divide-for-prairie-des.html

Tuesday, July 14, 2009. Day 17 - Continental Divide. Leaving New England for the upper Midwest took us from a place where they call lakes "ponds" to one where they call a lakes "lakes."   By the time we got to Aberdeen, South Dakota, the same things were being called "potholes."   To folks in this country, a lake is usually a large reservoir created by damming a river valley with a dam. Lakefront at cousin John's house in Richmond, Minnesota. Drain above Horseshoe Lake, Richmond Township, Minnesota.

A Freshwater Journey from Maine to Montana: Day 11 - Twin Cities and North

http://waldentowobegon.blogspot.com/2009/07/day-11-urban-kettles-city-edge-mille.html

Wednesday, July 8, 2009. Day 11 - Twin Cities and North. Though I like cities for the change of pace,  my nerves almost always get overstimulated.  The previous night's downtown reading and this day's  interview with All Things Considered on Minnesota Public Radio required navigating downtown freeways on unfamiliar exits.  This woke me up far too early, something would pay for it later that night when I couldn't tell one road from another on my map. Perhaps nobody does. But Ingrid has an idea. Were not t...

A Freshwater Journey from Maine to Montana: Day 15 - Lake Union

http://waldentowobegon.blogspot.com/2009/07/13-mon-holdingford-avon-to-sisseton-sd.html

Sunday, July 12, 2009. Day 15 - Lake Union. Sunday was a day goodbyes, following the 15-hour picnic of the day before. Kristine and I didn’t leave for our planned day trip to Erskine until after 3:00 PM.  Our destination was the original family cabin on Union Lake, which my grandfather, Theodore W. Thorson, bought in 1928 for $500. . Cottage at Lake Union, Erskine, Minnesota, has been in the family since 1928, and is about the size of many modern garages. Wheat was in the late 19. Tuesday, July 7, 2009. Day 10 - Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail. 160; What a beautiful day to wake up in such a beautiful place as Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Our good weather since crossing the Adirondack Mountains has been as consistent as the bad weather on the other side. Today we were eager to reach North Saint Paul, Minnesota, where my little sister lives. It lies just a few miles west of the Wisconsin border. Within a few minute we passed a series of bogs (not blogs), which cover most of the map sheet.
