Building our Home in Tokyo. * Sharing Memories and Experiences about Living in Japan. Nothing irritates me more in the morning than to find cigarette butts, papers, plastic bags, ramen cups, and all types of other garbage on our property! Every single day, I find stuff on our driveway that does not belong to us! Now, there's not much I can do about that except place a large wooden fence around our property, which we are actually very seriously considering at this point. Same place, different day:. When w...

Building our Home in Tokyo. * Sharing Memories and Experiences about Living in Japan. For the first time in so many years in Japan, we finally spent winter in a well-insulated house with double-paned windows. We no longer had to deal with dripping wet glass and humidity. No mouldy walls either, incredible! Oh, and of course, the life saver during nighttime trips to the toilet: the seat warmer! A lot of work was involved in preparing the driveway for cement. The area was first covered with gravel and ...

Building our Home in Tokyo. * Sharing Memories and Experiences about Living in Japan. August 5th was Handover day! We went over construction details with our Builder and made some last-minute decision for a few items that have yet to be installed. We are still missing our post box, our outside lighting, a faucet on the deck and a few other minor things. A TEPCO team, came to set up the electrical cables. We've gotten used to the electrical cabling style in Japan:. The cables run from the house to . It tu...

Building our Home in Tokyo. * Sharing Memories and Experiences about Living in Japan. One of the highlights of this project was the discovery of the handcrafted lamp shop. While seaching online for the perfect lights, and obviously not finding anything to my liking in the big name catalogs, I came across. And was immediately taken by the original style of the lighting featured in their online catalog. On display in the elegant French-style boutique were a number of lamps I immediately fell in love with!

Building our Home in Tokyo. * Sharing Memories and Experiences about Living in Japan. We are soon approaching the date of the Construction Plans Inspection, set for mid-January. Yakushiji-san is busy preparing tons of documents with all the details about our new home, which will be submitted to an inspector in charge of approving our plans and giving the green light to construction. Some of the key issues we discussed were :. To avoid the Sick House Syndrome, Japan’s Building Standards Law requires...

Building our Home in Tokyo. * Sharing Memories and Experiences about Living in Japan. We've been living in our new house for a little over a week now, and we are definitely enjoying the change! It's been simply amazing! We still have a lot of boxes to go through, items to send to recycling and furniture to buy, but we can still function pretty well. Here are a few snaps taken just before the movers came to unload our boxes and furniture. More on how we're coping with the stress of being homeowners shortly.

Building our Home in Tokyo. * Sharing Memories and Experiences about Living in Japan. Putty, not "Pâté". Last time we checked, our walls were being prepared for painting. This involves the application of putty. Sidebar here: it took us a while to realize that the Japanese equivalent of this term, パテ (PATÉ), actually referred to putty and not the famous French appetizer! It's a good thing the weather was a bit cooler because this type of work can sure make you sweat, especially to reach those high incline...

Building our Home in Tokyo. * Sharing Memories and Experiences about Living in Japan. It's been two months now that we've settled into our new home. It feels fantastic! The greatest thing about this place is the amount of light that we get. And the space! We finally have a spot for everything! The cement needs a few hours to dry, then it needs to be brushed for a clean finish. We used BIG 10 ( 水性ビッグ10多用途) by. And selected a grayish blue -. It took a couple of days to do it all, leisurely: cleaning, rinsi...
