Reflections on Byzantine Art and Architecture: Hagia Sophia, the Building Herself
http://sailing-to-byzantium-2008-02.blogspot.com/2008/07/haghia-sophia-building-herself.html
Reflections on Byzantine Art and Architecture. Friday, July 18, 2008. Hagia Sophia, the Building Herself. Think of any major building you have seen being built in modern day. What is one of the biggest pieces of construction equipment that pops into your head? A giant crane lifting large metal I-beams into the air to be riveted into place by guys who eat their lunches sitting atop the bare metallic skeleton of a building in a fashion right out of the 1920’s, right? That’s 56 meters, or 184 feet! The amou...

Istanbul's Byzantine Legacy: July 2008
http://sailing-to-byzantium-2008-04.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Friday, July 18, 2008. End of an Era. Prior to coming to Istanbul, I only had a vague idea of what the term Byzantine meant. It seemed to conjure images of a far away ancient place very different from my own home. The term Byzantine was often used to describe things such as the US government, which is highly complex and confusing. Really, the only time I had really heard the term Byzantine was in the poem "Sailing to Byzantium.". Thursday, July 17, 2008. Yedikule Fortress and the Byzantine Walls. The emp...

Istanbul's Byzantine Legacy: A Question of Iconography
http://sailing-to-byzantium-2008-04.blogspot.com/2008/07/differences-in-byzantineeastern.html
Tuesday, July 15, 2008. A Question of Iconography. Today, I wanted to address the iconography and symbolism contained in Byzantine art and my personal feelings and observances of it. The symbolism which I find most intriguing in Byzantine art revolves around the difference between it and the symbolism contained in Western European art. When I speak of Byzantine and Western art, I am referring. Specifically of the iconography contained in Christian art. Of torture, imprisonment, and despair. End of an Era.

Homestay - KIIS Austria-Bregenz: Summer 2012
http://kiisaustria-bregenzsummer2012.weebly.com/homestay.html
KIIS Austria-Bregenz: Summer 2012. Typical Day in Bregenz. Brigitte: Our Austrian Mother. The Homestay was one of the biggest reasons I chose the Bregenz program (that and I LOVE mountains). I was not disappointed! Our Austrian mother was awesome! She was a very inspiring woman and truly made my European experience special! It was a great insight to Austrian culture that I would not have experienced living in a dorm or hotel. Click through the pictures below to see and read about our house!
