In 2012, Enniscorthy Castle was successful in securing Heritage Council funding to undertake research into the rare medieval wall art that is visible in the dungeon of the Castle. Dr. Rory Sherlock was engaged to undertake research into it origins, possible date, and conservation. The history of halberdier posed more questions than answers, and it was our intention to attempt to ascertain its origins, date, and best methods for conservation.

Eileen Gray – Enniscorthy Castle

Colm Toibin’s Brooklyn: the book the movie. Eileen Gray (1878-1976) was born in Brownswood, Enniscorthy to a family of Scottish descent. Today she is known for her modern minimalist furniture and architecture although her work also includes lacquer and more traditional pieces. In 2009, her Frauteuil aux Dragons armchair sold for just under 22 million, setting an auction record. The exhibition also explores the 1916 Rising in Enniscorthy, (only town to rise outside of Dublin), as well as the work of the renowned Irish furniture designer and architect Eileen Gray (born in 1878 just outside the town).
