A half's sail to the north of Battle Harbour, Triangle Harbor. And Cape Bluff Harbor. Are just south of Cape Bluff. There was a substantial ocean surge just outside Triangle Harbor as we approached the entrance in 2000, but fortunately, we were greeted by two fishermen who gladly piloted us into the harbor with their dory. The small outport is currently enjoys a thriving local crab fishery, and this small village is alive once again, even though no cod is drying on flakes onshore.

Nova Scotia Photo Index. Though it was never our destination, Nova Scotia was always much more than a waypoint on our voyages north. Donald McKay, famous later in the United States for designing and building the fleetest of the Clipper Ships, began his shipbuilding career in Shelburne. As his reputation and expertise grew, he relocated his yard to Boston. But for many years numerous fine Grand Banks schooners were built in this small town, which today retains a population of 1,875. Rather than sailing ar...

Return to Home Page. Obviously the boat must be well found to begin with, but other considerations must also be taken into account. A single side band HF radio, weather-fax, or at least a short wave receiver capable of receiving the relevant weather forecasts is essential. VHF repeater systems, operated by the Canadian Coast Guard, provide excellent communication, telephone patch, and weather broadcasts, but coverage extends only a few miles beyond Hopedale (55°27'N). Log of the s/v Tamara: AN HONOR
http://krillroye.blogspot.com/2012/04/honor.html
Sunday, April 01, 2012. An invitation to the CCA Annual Awards Dinner at the New York Yacht Club on March 2nd was extended and after much consideration it was decided that we would accept the award in person. Being able to use airline mile awards and a free night at the NYC Yacht Club made the decision to go all the more appealing. But it was going to have to be strictly a fly in, fly out trip. OK, where did we go? Posted by Editor at 7:45 AM. I will print this and give it to Dorothy. You both look great!
Log of the s/v Tamara: Prince William Summer
http://krillroye.blogspot.com/2012/09/prince-william-summer.html
Tuesday, September 18, 2012. May is always a busy time in Cordova, as fishermen are readying their boats and nets for the season. The fish-boat rush to haul-out meant that Tamara would have to wait until early June for her turn. We would be allowed to stay on the boat during the haul-out, but part of the work involved very toxic fumes and required us to stay in a spare room of a friend thank you Bill! It's not unusual to encounter other pleasure boats when close to Cordova, Valdez or Whittier, but once i...
Log of the s/v Tamara: Winter Cruise in Prince William Sound
http://krillroye.blogspot.com/2012/06/winter-cruise-in-prince-william-sound.html
Tuesday, June 05, 2012. Winter Cruise in Prince William Sound. But Prince William Sound was another world altogether. The sound is replete with small, well protected anchorages, many of which afford opportunity to run lines ashore to securely moor a boat. This would be essential, as the mountains and glaciers of the region generate severe, sometimes violent, katabatic winds. It just wouldn't do to be up skiing and have a williwaw blow the yacht aground, or out to sea. As I turned into the narrow entrance...
Log of the s/v Tamara: About Nancy and Mark
http://krillroye.blogspot.com/2005/07/about-nancy-and-mark.html
Saturday, July 30, 2005. About Nancy and Mark. Nancy's love of the outdoors and hiking fueled her interest in geology and in 1985, after returning to college, graduated from the University of Washington with a BS in geology. Though she's never worked in the field, she views the world through the eyes of a geologist and naturalist. Posted by Photoessayist at 7:17 PM. About . . . Greetings From The Azores! Log of the s/v Tamara: Return Along Alaska Peninsula
http://krillroye.blogspot.com/2013/10/return-along-alaska-peninsula.html
Tuesday, October 22, 2013. Return Along Alaska Peninsula. The Outer Shumigan Islands had intrigued us each time we looked at a chart of the area. Unlike Nagai Island, the Konuiji Islands are rarely visited by local fishermen or yachts transiting the Alaska Peninsula. Since we now had extra time we could wait for fair weather and explore the area. Our intended first anchorage was to be Simeonof Harbor on the island of the same name, but once we arrived, it was apparent that it was too shallow for Tamara.
Log of the s/v Tamara: About The s/v Tamara
http://krillroye.blogspot.com/2005/07/about-sv-tamara.html
Saturday, July 30, 2005. About The s/v Tamara. Tamara is heavily insulated with sprayed in place foam, and well heated by a Sig-Mar diesel fueled stove, and hot water "bus heater" that scavenges heat from the engine when motoring. Her welded aluminum dodger provides an enclosed helm station, and is heated from below. Posted by Photoessayist at 7:24 PM. About . . . About Nancy and Mark. Greetings From The Azores! Log of the s/v Tamara: Hitting The Trail
http://krillroye.blogspot.com/2012/05/hitting-trail.html
Wednesday, May 02, 2012. As one gets older and looks back on life, it's inevitable to ask, What do I still want to accomplish before it isn’t possible to do so physically or mentally . I’ve always wanted to do a long hike and have been seriously considering the Pacific Crest Trail. 2,6635 miles for some time. After thinking about it for several years, I finally picked a start date and began making plans. And use my hiking poles as tent poles. At 9:15 am I began the hike. Was I really doing this? I asked ...
Log of the s/v Tamara: Dempster Highway
http://krillroye.blogspot.com/2014/10/dempster-highway.html
Thursday, October 23, 2014. Mark had driven our Subaru Forester to Alaska in March. We decided that it would be fun to take a side trip on the way back home to Port Townsend. The side trip would be up the Canadian Dempster Highway, past the Arctic Circle and to Inuvik, Northwest Territories near the mouth of the Mackenzie River, just off the Beaufort Sea. Fire was always a threat, as the wooden structure became saturated with oil over time, and the steam powered trains of the day were notorious for emitt...
Log of the s/v Tamara: Alaska Peninsula
http://krillroye.blogspot.com/2013/07/alaskan-peninsula.html
Monday, July 01, 2013. Winter was late to leave Prince William Sound as we headed out of Cordova on May 19th. Thompson Pass above Valdez had just gotten several feet of new snow, and snow was still blanketed the shorelines above the tide line. With each day the snow was slowly retreating, and the melt water was gushing out of streams and the numerous waterfalls that cascade over the mountain ledges. The first obstacle in getting to the Peninsula is crossing the Gulf of Alaska. There are three weather...

Log of the s/v Tamara
Wednesday, January 03, 2018. In what is now an annual event, Mark drove north to Valdez for the ferry to Cordova the end of February to prepare for his solo winter cruise in Prince William Sound. During Mark's winter sojourn in late February and March of this past year, he experienced for the first time a unique event that puzzled him for a few days until he finally recalled enough of a chemistry class fifty years in the past to solve the mystery. A strong easterly gale driving heavy snow sped Tamara.
