On Thursday afternoon, September 23, Chisako, Diana and I spent a couple of hours at the weaving studio of the lovely and very talented Misao Iwamura. She is the author of a book on plain weave. And was featured in an article in VavMagasinet. 2008, Vol. 3) which I enjoyed reading. She is also a guest lecturer and teacher at the Kawashima Textile School. For some beautiful photos of her work.

Kyoto Trip - September 2010. Adventures in textiles during a 2-week visit to Kyoto. Thursday, September 16, 2010. Jorie Johnson lives in the south end of Kyoto, not far from Fushimi-Inari, so we made our way to her home and studio after our visit to the shrine. She had recently returned from her summer teaching tour in the States but showed no signs of fatigue - she is a bundle of energy and quite the host! And teaching a workshop through Maiwa. Kyoto Trip - September 2010. Adventures in textiles during a 2-week visit to Kyoto. Saturday, September 25, 2010. Shodo Iwagaki and the Mairai-Ji Zen Temple. On Sunday, September 19th, after leaving Katsuyama, seven of us stopped for Indian food on our way to visit the Mairai-Ji Zen Temple, set discreetly on a hillside street in a small village. I will never forget this magical visit. Depict writings from Zen Buddhism. Shodo Iwagaki at the Mairai-Ji Zen Temple. Shodo demonstrating his woodblock printing.

Itajime Natural Dyes Workshop. I recently taught a wonderful group of women from the Connecticut Handweavers' Guild. How to make silk scarves in the "itajime" technique. We folded and clamped silk scarves with shapes of wood and worked with indigo, marigold, cochineal, chestnut and iron to get lots of color variation. We were blessed with a perfect spring day, and I think everyone had fun and learned a lot. Here are several pictures from our day. Read about it at.

Last weekend I was able to catch a show called "Surface Appeal:Material Perception" at the Dedee Shattuck Gallery. In Westport MA. I was immediately drawn to several small textiles on the far wall, created by Paula Stebbins Becker. Of RI So interesting and lovely. Here's my favorite. To quote from her artist statement:. Links to Articles for Forward Folding. And the third a posting on World Shibori Network. I took the show down on Saturday, and am back in my studio working on ideas for my next series.

Taking a workshop at Penland in North Carolina has been on my bucket list for many years, and in October I finally had a chance to go. I took a week-long workshop called "Altered Structures" with Rachel Meginnes. What an amazing week it was! What's on my Loom. Spent last Saturday deconstructing and reconstructing discarded encyclopedias with fiber artist Wendy Wah. L 6 hours of pure play and experimentation felt good. Here are some pictures from our day. Slices of the Landscape. I have been cropping landscape photos I've taken - in Exeter, RI, Vancouver, BC and the Badlands - into vertical "slices". While I'm weaving my latest hall runner I'm mulling over how I can do a series of weavings inspired by them. In the meantime, I'm enjoying just looking at them. Not much rug weaving, but I am determined to get back to that as soon as I can. Mostly playing around with different ideas and getting a few finished scarves out there for sale. Material+Culture -  Kate Barber Textiles

http://www.katebarbertextiles.com/1/post/2014/05/materialculture.html

I've been working on a few new pieces for an exhibit at the Silk Weaving Studio. In Vancouver. The show is entitled "Material Culture" and features work inspired by the beautiful Sanjo Silk. Yarns The scarves are woven with a fine and luscious silk/wool blend with floats of heavier silk/wool which I cut after washing and fulling to create little eyelashes one one side of the scarves. On the other side, little twill squares appear where the floats are tied down. Read about it at.

KyotoTrip -

To sum it up!

Kyoto Trip - September 2010

Kyoto Trip - September 2010. Adventures in textiles during a 2-week visit to Kyoto. Tuesday, September 28, 2010. If it weren't for my wonderful friend Chisako, this trip would not have happened! Chisako and I met 10 years ago at a weaving workshop in Coupeville, Washington. By chance, several years later we found ourselves weaving side by side at the Silk Weaving Studio. In Vancouver, B.C. It was a very sad day for me when Chisako and her husband returned Japan in 2007. Monday, September 27, 2010. Where ...
