Adventures of an interpreting translator. The loss of Miguel Llorens. Posted by Diane McCartney. September 29, 2012. I just read about the death of a highly respected colleague that I was looking forward to meeting in Warsaw next week. He hadn’t blogged since the beginning of August, which didn’t seem so unusual then but seemed rather strange in September. Miguel. Was always on top of things and knew how to address the most controversial issues with a wit and an insight that will be sorely missed. MOX th...

Adventures of an interpreting translator. I hate my job. Posted by Diane McCartney. May 21, 2012. There are days when I hate my job, but if there’s one thing I hate more, it’s when people complain about their job in front of customers. I walked into a drugstore at the weekend to the sound of a bitching employee and almost walked right back out. View all posts by Diane McCartney ». Adventures of an interpreting translator. Is there a terp in the building? Posted by Diane McCartney. January 17, 2012. We’re at a market research agency somewhere on Mars. Clint and Mod are reviewing the interview guide for last-minute changes. Meanwhile, the arriving respondents are asked to take a seat in the waiting room. Clint: You did book an interpreter for this evening, didn’t you? Mod: Yes, of course. He should be here any minute now. Mod: Reesie, are you sure you booked the interpreter? Reesie:...
Finding Dürer | Mixed metaphors

Adventures of an interpreting translator. Posted by Diane McCartney. May 1, 2012. 8212;—————————————————————————————————-. Revealing a Renaissance Man. The recent groundbreaking work in the lab has also sparked renewed debate about the life of this great Renaissance painter. Who was this man? How much do we actually know about him? It turns out that there were quite a few skeletons in Dürer’s closet, and as I translated the text, I felt increasingly like a modern-day Sherlock Holmes. The text I was trans...

Adventures of an interpreting translator. The Joy of Quiet or Friday Afternoon Madness. Posted by Diane McCartney. January 20, 2012. Isn’t it weird how it goes? All your customers wake up at the same time and need everything back on the same date. Yep, it’s Friday afternoon 3:15 pm, that time of the week when the jobs with the ridiculous deadlines start making their way through the ether and into your inbox. But last year was different. I not only made a commitment to myself to exercise, I made damn ...

Language N+1 | a polyglot blog about language learning
A polyglot blog about language learning. I recently discovered a great tool for language study called Learning With Texts. It’s a completely free web app that allows you to import texts and read them with automated dictionary lookups and vocabulary tracking. The idea is similar to the paid system Lingq, and in fact you can download texts and audio from Lingq using a free account and then study them in LWT. Highly recommended! The color-coding really helps to organize my attention to words as I read. ...

August 15, 2015 at 4:45 pm ( Life. I was asked to share a story from my time at a camp in Ukraine, but I struggle with story writing. So instead, let me share some of the beautiful things I witnessed. I saw a young and sweet boy, whose mother left him, share his darts with a girl and teach her how to throw them just right. I saw a group of girls help clean the dishes after a meal with smiles and laughter. I saw forty-two children live together, laugh, play, and make new friends. July 20, 2014 at 11:46 pm...
