Le Rêve et l'Asphalte. Le Langage des Oiseaux. During the summer of 2013, I spent time on the "Mar Michael Stairs" neighborhood of Beirut. This old part of town was centered on a steep slope and was home to the old, now defunct Vendome Cinema. It is soon to be completely demolished and replaced by shiny new condominiums. Real estate companies are trying to buy the old residents and owners out, and while some have left their homes, others still haven't given in. I sipped up their coffee and their stories.

Le Rêve et l'Asphalte. Le Langage des Oiseaux. In collaboration with Michelle Daher. Roseaux (The Reeds) is a project that sprung from the frustration inherent to the lack of public spaces in Beirut. It is an oneiric exploration of one of the rare public spaces in the city that becomes the theater of illicit sexual encounters at night. Mixing both documentation of and self representaion within the space allows me to question gender stereotypes and the notion of the non privately owned space.

Le Rêve et l'Asphalte. Le Langage des Oiseaux. Réconciliation is the result of an artistic process triggered by a double sense of despair. Despair facing the reality of a trauma (the loss of a loved one) and despair at the inability to find solace in remembrance as his memory was slowly fading. I confront these traces to my everyday life, juxtaposing two alien worlds: life and death, the body and the city to find through recovered remembrance, a nascent serenity.

Overnight, familiar landmarks disappear ; replaced by a hole in the ground, an open wound from where will emerge the shiny and the new. Out of sight, behind iron palisades, I cannot witness the process, I do not assimilate the change. This led me to create a pinhole camera which I used to take pictures of and through the fences that surround these sites.

The photographs were taken in Lebanon, on the premisces of Asfourieh, one of the first asylums built in the Middle East. That summer afternoon, I was accompanying fellow artist Chaghig Arzoumanian who was documenting this intrinsic part of her childhood landscape that will soon be turned into a shopping mall.
