A blog about everyday cooking. Laquo; Last of the summer tomatoes and squash gratin. November 5, 2011 by meredith. We’re almost in what my sister likes to call Pumpkin Time. Yes, I know Thanksgiving and Hallowe’en are over, and we’re all pretty much over celebrating the harvest. She means Pumpkin Time in the Cinderella sense, as in turning into one — the year’s fun has peaked; it’s done. Pumpkin Time is where Autumn turns to Almost Winter. For now, Pumpkin Time isn’t so bad. To up the nutritional factor ...

A blog about everyday cooking. Laquo; Blueberry oatmeal pancakes. Last of the summer tomatoes and squash gratin. October 17, 2011 by meredith. If harvest season were a novel, this would be the denouement. For the past few months we’ve had farm-fresh produce delivered right to our door through a CSA with our neighbour’s family farm, and it’s been a fantastic experience. Unpacking the box every Saturday afternoon felt a bit like Christmas: what do we get this week? Turn on the oven, I thought. Cook the lee...

Fighting words: January 2012
http://kerry-ryan.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Stuff, fluff and poems. Sunday, January 1, 2012. I do so love a year-end list, even one that's a little late. But when I started thinking back on 2011 in terms of writing, it seemed at first like there weren't many milestones. In a lot of ways, it wasn't a very productive year for me, other than 20 poems toward the Beaupre manuscript. During May Day (a leisurely pace for me) and a handful of random one-off pieces (some of which please me very much! I came within sniffing distance of the Bliss Carman Prize.

Stuff, fluff and poems. Thursday, September 29, 2011. In praise of distractions. It seems the bigger and more important the task at hand, the more likely it is that something entirely unrelated needs my undivided attention. And I don't mean the TV or the bottom of my wine glass. I mean useful, productive, even choresy. Kinds of things. When I was in school, looming exams always caused an urgent need to clean my room. (Also cut my own hair - surprisingly successful.). Stuff, fluff and poems. Tuesday, May 3, 2011. Snow's gone (again). Sun's back. It's May Day. In these parts. Let the grueling writing schedule begin! Although I have, a few times, completed 31 poems during May Days past, due to some mid-month travel, that won't happen this year. But, I'm using May Day 2011 to dive into my newest project: this guy. Edouard Beaupre, giant of Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan. More on him to come. Much more, hopefully. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Anvil Press, 2010. Nominated for t...

Stuff, fluff and poems. Tuesday, June 19, 2012. Plastered Hams. The name came from one of the poems we were looking at one evening (I think it was a Beatrix Potter reference (oh those two bad mice! And it stuck because it's wonderful. As are The Hams. For the past year, the four of us have met once a monthish to share and talk poetry. We get together on perfect-early-summer-green-evening porches and in gorgeous grown-uppy living rooms ( and sometimes at my house. And who trust me with their. Interview, e...

Stuff, fluff and poems. Tuesday, October 18, 2011. You show up in Spring Green, Wisconsin and the entire town comes out for the party. They arrange a perfect sunset followed by a beautiful evening for sitting outside. They give you dinner. And free beer. (And then they come around with a pitcher of More Free Beer.) They time a shooting star just perfectly. Earlier that day, we visited the Circus World Museum in nearby Baraboo (don't you have to go there, just for the name alone? As research for My Giant ...
Fighting words: Travel writing
http://kerry-ryan.blogspot.com/2012/04/its-pretty-fitting-that-i-spent-my.html
Stuff, fluff and poems. Saturday, April 28, 2012. It's pretty fitting that I spent my first weeks here, writing furiously, feverishly at a place called La Fragua (the forge). It's what's kind of great about writing in a new place. You get to be a foreigner even to yourself. And it's fun to explore a place you thought you knew so well. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Fighting words: Work: the space time continuum
http://kerry-ryan.blogspot.com/2012/04/space-time-continuum.html
Stuff, fluff and poems. Wednesday, April 25, 2012. Work: the space time continuum. Call my current situation a holiday. But since I've vacated my home and my job for three months, I guess that does make it a vacation. I've worked every day, to some degree, even though that work has ranged from moments of vague thinking about my manuscript to hours upon hours of butt-in-chair, pen-in-notebook/fingers-on-keyboard writing. For a holiday. This is the sweetest work life imaginable! So much work to do! With th...
Fighting words: March 2012
http://kerry-ryan.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Stuff, fluff and poems. Monday, March 26, 2012. Sometimes I write on my sunny little balcony, wispy curtains swirling around me.). The other day someone said to me that most writers here have found a spot inside the convent, tucked themselves away where there aren't distractions. Besides the fact that it's literally stone cold inside, I can't imagine anything worse than that - only a blank wall to distract me from a blank page. Still, I've always felt a connection between movement of the body and the min...

Saturday, March 20, 2010. Life is a Buffet. An old man came to the United States from Eastern Europe. In Manhattan, at a restaurant he wanted to have something to eat, he sat beside the empty dinner table, waiting for someone to take a plate to serve a la carte. But no one came, he waited for a long time, until he saw a woman carrying her full plate of food to sit opposite him. Pharmacy information helps save money on medication prices.
