Tuesday, May 3, 2011. Retro Review: The Mission Valley Years. Editor's note: while it may not appear to do so at first, this Retro Review will cover Payback, Idle Hands, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, 8mm, Resident Evil, Last Action Hero, Jeepers Creepers, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Jurassic Park III, Lethal Weapon 4, The Matrix, American Pie 2, and Vanilla Sky. While it's technically out of the year range listed above, I'd like to point out that I saw Last Action Hero. There are a ...

Cap'n Howdy's Blogorium: So You Won't Have To: Red State
http://capnhowdysblogorium.blogspot.com/2011/09/so-you-wont-have-to-red-state.html
Thursday, September 29, 2011. So You Won't Have To: Red State. This might sound strange, but I really prefer not writing So You Won't Have To. Reviews. It saves me the time of sitting through some unendurable piece of crap, and generally speaking you wouldn't be seeing it anyway (e.g. Evil Bong 3: The Wrath of Bong. However, enough people at work have been asking about Kevin Smith's Red State. To where, you ask? Might be (constant coverage on horror sites like Bloody Disgusting hasn't helped, nor did Smi...

Cap'n Howdy's Blogorium: Summer Fest Day Three: Student Bodies
http://capnhowdysblogorium.blogspot.com/2009/07/summer-fest-day-three-student-bodies.html
Saturday, July 4, 2009. Summer Fest Day Three: Student Bodies. Brags that it was the "First Horror Comedy", which is technically true, if you aren't counting something like Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. But I don't know how good. That distinction makes the movie. Just because you got there first doesn't mean the movie's necessarily going to be great, even if it's sporadically funny. And I'll give Student Bodies. Because they "couldn't afford the rights to the song") and a Wizard of Oz. The trick...

Cap'n Howdy's Blogorium: Retro Review: Hellboy II - The Golden Army
http://capnhowdysblogorium.blogspot.com/2012/07/retro-review-hellboy-ii-golden-army.html
Tuesday, July 24, 2012. Retro Review: Hellboy II - The Golden Army. Editor's note: After last week's Retro Review for The Dark Knight Rises, the Cap'n realized there was a series of Blogorium posts from 2008 that never made the transition from our old stomping grounds to the new one. As a result, it seemed like a good idea to share some other reviews that had been otherwise "lost" over the past four years). I wish I knew what to tell you guys about Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Film in the future. On the ...

Cap'n Howdy's Blogorium: The Cap'n: Debunker of Rumours.
http://capnhowdysblogorium.blogspot.com/2011/03/capn-debunker-of-rumours.html
Friday, March 4, 2011. The Cap'n: Debunker of Rumours. Every few months, I hear one of the two statements about my movie viewing habits:. 1 You didn't see that? I thought you saw everything! 2 Well, of course sounds bad. Everything you show at (fill in the blank) Fest is bad. A deliberate misleading of friends to come over and watch a movie only to show them something horrible (named for my devilish enjoyment of M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening. Somehow these facts, coupled with Bad Movie Night. In the...

Cap'n Howdy's Blogorium: Retro Review: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
http://capnhowdysblogorium.blogspot.com/2015/05/retro-review-mad-max-beyond-thunderdome.html
Thursday, May 14, 2015. Retro Review: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. So there's some kind of Mad Max. Movie coming out this weekend, but I heard it sucks so there's no point in talking about that, right? Why waste time talking about some dumb reboot when we can discuss the true highlight of George Miller's post-apocalyptic saga, the only one to have earned its own dedicated Mystery Science Theater 3000. Of course, I'm talking about Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. The Road Warrior) and / or forget that Mad Max 1.

Cap'n Howdy's Blogorium: The Cap'n Presents: Adventures in Projectioneering (Part Four)

Monday, March 21, 2011. The Cap'n Presents: Adventures in Projectioneering (Part Four). Sometimes, being a projectionist has its perks, although by the end of this story you might wonder how much of a "perk" it really turned out to be. One night, while I was working for a local multiplex, a few friends thought it might be fun to stick around after the theatre closed and watch one of the fourteen films playing *. And much to my surprise the assistant managers in charge that night gave it their blessing.

http://capnhowdysblogorium.blogspot.com/2014/01/2013-recap-final-stretch-before-best-of.html
Tuesday, January 14, 2014. 2013 Recap: The Final Stretch Before the "Best Of" (Part Four). New York (and Jersey) State of Mind. As much as I personally enjoyed Noah Baumbach's Frances Ha. Has to catch you in just the right mood. On the other hand, if it does strike your fancy, you'll find a lot to enjoy in what is an essentially jubilant and upbeat take on the quarter-life crisis. Baumbach borrows music from The 400 Blows. And King of Hearts. The Jersey equivalent of Frances Ha. He likes porn, she likes ...
