Midnight Monkey Monitor: August 2009
http://leafmonkey.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Thursday, August 06, 2009. This morning I took this picture from my office building. Seems like the haze is back indeed. Although I saw the haze at home this morning, a visit to NEA website this morning stated PSI was still good. I wonder if it got worse in the next update. Oh well. This Channel NewsAsia article shows that it did. Haze in Singapore as 50 hot spots detected in Sumatra. By Hasnita A Majid, Channel NewsAsia. SINGAPORE: The haze is back in Singapore and you can expect more hazy days ahead.

Midnight Monkey Monitor: Heron Watch 2014
http://leafmonkey.blogspot.com/2014/04/heron-watch-2014.html
Thursday, April 10, 2014. Last Saturday, the husband and I had the opportunity to ride the very low tides of Kranji Reservoir with a PUB officer Mr Osman and Dr Yam Tim Wing of Nparks to do a survey of herons as part of the nationwide survey Heron Watch 2014. This means if you don't find them or find less of them, either there is nothing to eat, or no home to stay or make babies! We are no birding experts but the husband and I were quite enamoured by the presentation by Luan Keng that we accidentally stu...

Tuesday, July 24, 2012. Read more to find out more about this photo circulating facebook. This is a really creative campaign in Germany created by Ogilvy and Mather(? To raise funds for the forest. As I often said, creativity is only limited by our imagination (and the outdoor advertising law in Singapore lol). And the worry that somebody will run off with the donation box? Just across the Horizon. On a manned spaceship hurtling through space. Entries by tag: world. March 26th, 2011. If I had to choose, I would pick this lecture as my favourite. Why? With this three-pronged approach to sustainable development, there can finally be less debate about the fuzzy and nebulous concept, and hopefully some real action beyond ‘greenwashing’. One of the questions that popped into my mind was how this notion of environmental sustainability matches up to the 4 Millennium Ecosystem Asse...

Just across the Horizon. On a manned spaceship hurtling through space. Five: Politics of Sustainable Development. February 15th, 2011. Should we advocate – or, to use a stronger word, preach – our idea of sustainable development to others? Looking at the bigger picture, there are many ways that one can think about sustainable development. Two main strands stand out, according to Collin Williams and Andrew Millington in their paper “ The diverse and contested meanings of sustainable development.

Just across the Horizon. On a manned spaceship hurtling through space. Thirteen: Environmental Awareness in the City. April 1st, 2011. The truth is, most Singaporeans do not know about, as Karen puts it “the other Singaporeans”: those who can fly, glide or live under water. I admit too that I never really knew what wonders this tiny island held until after junior college when I visited some of the amazing shores like Pulau Semakau with Team Seagrass. Less relevant to our lives and inferior to development...

Just across the Horizon. On a manned spaceship hurtling through space. March 17th, 2011. Before the lecture, I never knew that NUS had an Environmental Policy. If I were to hazard a guess, I would say that no student from NUS (with the notable exception of those from GE3239 and SAVE. Evidently, being environmentally-aware is not in our nature. Why is that so? Last semester, my professor for the module Biodiversity and Conservation Biology. While this is more applicable during formative years of childhood...

Just across the Horizon. On a manned spaceship hurtling through space. Nine: The Blame Game. March 12th, 2011. Ten minutes into the presentation by Shell’s representative (for social investment? Yet, what exactly were we expecting? Were we so idealistic to think that a Transnational Corporation (TNC) like Shell would give up its profit-generating fossil fuels just because of growing concern about climate change? Does this mean that we can never lead environmentally-responsible lifestyles, because whateve...

Midnight Monkey Monitor: Goodbye Clementi
http://leafmonkey.blogspot.com/2006/11/goodbye-clementi.html
Sunday, November 05, 2006. It pains me to see this. Even though they are just introduced wayside trees for aesthetics and shade, it pains me to see any tree of that age, size and girth being cut down to make way for new developments. It's going to be another toa payoh hub. Yet another old neighborhood with the 70s character in the process of being erased and redeveloped. Yet another piece of our history gone like the trees scheduled to be eliminated. Life is full of juxtapositions. Nothing made the point...
