Librarian in Space

Thursday, October 16, 2014. The Eye of the Reader. I'm fascinated by the different ways people read science fiction. I'm working on Susan Matthews for Novelist, and am checking out "Colony Fleet." The Amazon reviews are all over the place. One reviewer compares it to Matthew's Judiciary series, and gives it 3 stars because it seems simplistic in comparison, but still worth reading. A third gives it 5 stars because it's stronger and more complex than the Judiciary series. Is active and includes a bunch of...

Librarian in Space: Fantasy Tropes: Science Fantasy

http://www.librarianinspace.blogspot.com/2012/10/fantasy-tropes-science-fantasy.html

Thursday, October 4, 2012. Fantasy Tropes: Science Fantasy. From my MLA 2012 Fantasy presentation. How important is it to categorize? As long as it’s a good story, do we care? Maybe better to use specific story elements or a feel when doing RA. By Marion Zimmer Bradley. Uses a number of Fantasy themes – psi powers advanced to the point of working like magic. However treated almost scientifically with natural laws, experiments, and repeated results. By Madeline L’Engle. Travel to different planets. Lost c...

Librarian in Space: December 2011

http://www.librarianinspace.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 1, 2011. I'm reading my way through the Sherlock Holmes canon - I just finished "The Adventure of the Stockbroker's Clerk" - and I'm finding Doyle's writing style and choices very interesting. I'm enjoying his descriptive passages - he has quite the eye for landscape - and his characters. He manages to give enough defining characteristics to make them interesting and individual to the mystery. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Astronomy Picture of the Day.

Librarian in Space: A Rose from Old Terra by Don Sakers

http://www.librarianinspace.blogspot.com/2014/08/a-rose-from-old-terra-by-don-sakers.html

Sunday, August 31, 2014. A Rose from Old Terra by Don Sakers. A Rose from Old Terra. Source: ILL - Red Wing Public Library. I heard about it sometime during my online peregrinations. Reason I got it: Librarians in Space. I'm a librarian by vocation and avocation, and I'm also a science fiction aficionado. Mix the two, and I'll for darn sure at least give it a try. From the dedication, it looks like the author is/was a librarian as well. I almost thoroughly approved of his gender politics; practically spe...

Librarian in Space: Fantasy Moods: Dark Fantasy

http://www.librarianinspace.blogspot.com/2012/10/fantasy-moods-dark-fantasy.html

Thursday, October 4, 2012. Fantasy Moods: Dark Fantasy. From my MLA 2012 Fantasy Presentation. Some will tell you that dark fantasy is fantasy and horror mixed together. I don. 8217; t see it quite like that. Too much of the dark stuff I. 8217; ve read doesn. 8217; t fit into that framework for me. It can be hard to tell where dark fantasy leaves off and horror begins. My feeling is that a lot of it depends on where professional classifiers. 8211; publishers and catalogers.
