Monday, May 26, 2014. After watching Clinton's small-town Memorial Day Parade, we went by the local cemetery and placed flowers on the graves of Revolutionary War soldiers. I can remember putting flowers on the graves of unknown soldiers when I was little. It was nice to see my kids doing something similar. Thursday, May 08, 2014. Tuesday, February 17, 2015. Mardi Gras in Mobile. Mobile made our list of places to visit in Alabama before moving. Of course, we wanted to go during Mardi Gras. Mobile claims to be the birthplace of Mardi Gras. We aren't really sure how true that is, but the city surely takes pride in the idea. Mobile also boasts a family-friendly Mardi Gras, which made it a better pick than New Orleans. Mobile is also home to the USS Alabama and submarine USS Drum. Lena welcomed us aboard. Our crew each claimed a bunk.

Monday, January 19, 2015. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Holden is walking around a water-covered monument that identifies some of the people who lost their lives during the Civil Rights Movement. A blank space appears on the monument to acknowledge the many unknown names and faces of others who suffered. Our kids just can't resist climbing on a cannon when presented with one. Sunday, June 08, 2014. We continued our Revolutionary War kick and visited Fort Stanwix in Rome one more time before moving. The kids really got into trying out some costumes and props available to visitors. Holden is still working on which way is up on his weapon. Lena isn't the most intimidating soldier, but she may be the happiest. Dance recital take 2. Kirkland Art Center's Family Festival. Joseph was able to hit the water balloon. He was pretty excited to get wet. Dad won the pillow fight with Joseph.

This weekend, we took advantage of another USO tour and went on an orientation trip around Kaiserslautern, which is town that anchors all the American military bases in the area. We learned about the town's history, special sites to visit, and shopping districts. A fountain features multiple statues that illustrate the town's history and industry.
