Tony Whelpton's Blog. Some thoughts on literary style – 2. Posted by Tony Whelpton. October 26, 2014. Many years ago, shortly after my career as an academic began, one of my undergraduate students asked me “What is literary style? And in particular, what is ‘good’style? I have to say straight away that my ultimate answer, to which I still subscribe forty or so years later, was much more influenced by my French rather than by English literary background, for I made an immediate distinction between style a...

Some thoughts on literary style – 1 | The Literary Lounge

https://literaryloungeblog.wordpress.com/2014/10/15/some-thoughts-on-literary-style-1-2

Tony Whelpton's Blog. Some thoughts on literary style – 1. Posted by Tony Whelpton. October 15, 2014. When, shortly after completing my first novel, I began submitting it to agents and publishers, there were invariably two questions which I was required to answer and which I found incredibly difficult. Surely, I felt, the essential aspect of any person’s writing must be that they have something different to say or a different way to say it. We have all, when all is said and done, come across authors whos...

Tony Whelpton's Blog. Some thoughts on literary style – 1. When, shortly after completing my first novel, I began submitting it to agents and publishers, there were invariably two questions which I was required to answer and which I found incredibly difficult. Surely, I felt, the essential aspect of any person’s writing must be that they have something different to say or a different way to say it. The second question was even more baffling. In what genre should my novel be classed? When I lectured on 19...

A small adventure in opinionated literary criticism. Aphrodite’s Child’s 666: Revelation Allusion. This controversial, nearly blasphemous album was released in 1972, only to be highly censored and banned from radio play ( Vangelis Lyrics. This entire album is a musical adaptation of the Book of Revelation, with song titles such as Seven Bowls, Babylon, The Beast, The Battle of the Locusts, and Seven Trumpets. I figured I would break down two songs from the twenty-four track album. And its rider had a bow.

Tony Whelpton's Blog. A new (French) review of The Heat of the Kitchen. Posted by Tony Whelpton. November 17, 2014. As you probably know, The Heat of the Kitchen is a story about a little town in Provence which only exists in my imagination, so I find it particularly interesting when French people pass comments on it. I received recently a review from a very old friend indeed. His name is Michel Rabinovitch, and he … Continue reading →. A new (French) review of The Heat of the Kitchen. Helen Hart, Author.

Authors, Book Reviews, News and Interviews. Wednesday, 8 August 2012. In love: Once and Forever - Book Review 3. In love: Once and Forever. By the author’s own admission, the book may have been written in the worst possible English, but this book indeed draws its positives. Not a work of fiction or a novel, the book written in autobiographical style traces the life course of the author through his adolescence. This book is a must-have for those going through the phase of adolescence, unrequited lovers an...

Posted by Margaret @ 9:11 AM. Tuesday, July 11, 2006. Finally finished "Darwin's Dangerous Idea." I really liked it. Dennett's writing is elegant and witty, rife with metaphors and analogies (although it must be admitted that quite a bit of it was over my head). The Role of Language - this got very interesting as Dennett takes on Cho...
