Blogger in the big city. Love in the time of cholera-Gabriel Garcia Marquez. February 20, 2016. February 21, 2016. I have mixed feelings about this love story. I appreciate that it is exquisitely written with fine details so that you feel as if you are standing in a Caribbean thunderstorm with the characters. The magic realism that Marquez so skillfully weaves through his narrative is wonderful, and I’ll be the first to admit that I love a bit of magical realism. I feel like Lorelai and Rory are my only ...

Blogger in the big city. The Historian- Elizabeth Kostova. October 18, 2015. November 30, 2015. I’m very seldom disappointed by books, probably because I’ll pretty much read anything, and generally it’s a rule of mine to approach books without any expectation. I will say that Kostova’s writing itself is great, and she gives a very established sense of place throughout the various countries that the characters travel too. However, this book is a commitment, and if you’re a. Jamie Fraser confirms my suspic...

Blogger in the big city. A year of marvellous ways- Sarah Winman. June 12, 2016. June 12, 2016. This is one of those books that I found myself enjoying-despite myself. That’s because at times it felt like you could see that the author was trying too hard to write a whimsical story. That she was pushing the magical realism a little too hard, and at times the plot is perfectly predictable. June 3, 2016. July 11, 2016. Wasn’t something I needed in my life. It gave me nightmares, and at a time when...That sa...

Blogger in the big city. A walk in the woods – Bill Bryson. January 31, 2016. January 31, 2016. I put this book down more than three days ago, but in my mind I’m still wandering through the deep woods of America’s back country. I’ve never read a Bill Bryson book before, but I must say that. A walk in the Woods. A short history of tractors in Ukrainian – Marina Lewycka. January 28, 2016. January 28, 2016. Blogger in the big city. Memoirs of a Geisha – Arthur Golden. July 7, 2016. Sometimes you find a book that is more like meeting a person and developing a friendship than just picking up another paperback. Memoirs of a Geisha. Was precisely this for me, and I feel quite upset like I’ll never find another book that is quite as enchanting as this one. Gone with the Wind. Lord of the Rings. If that testifies to the richness of this tale and the fact that it is definitely a modern classic). I am the messenger.

Blogger in the big city. A Passage to India-E.M. Forster. March 13, 2016. EM Forster’s seminal work. A Passage to India. Is anything but an easy read. It took me three weeks. Not only because of the difficulties of the themes that he wrestles with (rape, racism and colonial domination) but also, because the author assumes the reader’s familiarity with Indian terms, concepts and traditions, especially under British rule (I suppose that’s why there are three appendices to the novel). Blogger in the big city. The Fionavar Tapestry – Guy Gavriel Kay. December 1, 2015. January 7, 2016. Whenever someone asked me what I was reading during the last few weeks, I coyly avoided the question, palming it off with the response Oh, just some mindless fantasy, it won’t change the world or anything, but it’s very entertaining. Which, coincidentally, is the ideal way to describe The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. It’s fluffy and entertaining, and if you can dig into a bit of fantasy-escapism,...

Blogger in the big city. The Widow of the South-Robert Hicks. September 16, 2015. September 15, 2015. Since completing the charming. And considering the fact that I’ve embargoed myself from buying any more second hand books until I finish the millions I’ve bought, I thought I would go on a historical fiction detour. So, almost a year after buying it, I picked up The Widow of the South. My initial reasons for buying this book were somewhat insubstantial: I recognised the cover, and. Gone with the Wind.
