Grass dominates the wide valleys, serving as food for reindeer herds. In the evening the sun goes down very slowly; an artic sundown provides plenty of time for taking photographs. Some ice is still floating on mountain lakes in August. The ice floe looks just like an aircraft carrier. The largest snow drifts claim to be the smallest glaciers. The river's gate is big enough to let a truck pass through. This nomad is travelling together with his family and a herd of one thousand reindeers.
Onekotan Island

Onekotan is an uninhabited island, although a few Russian border troops are keeping guard in a bay on the Okhotsk Sea. In former time Japanese troops were stationed during WWII, when the Kurile Islands still belonged to Japan, and, after the occupation by Soviet troops in 1945 the Soviet military dominated the precence of human beings. Fishermen and expeditions are frequent, but rare guests. The following pages contain photographs of the area around Mt. Krenitsyn.

The Altai is much alike the Alps, but still untouched by civilization. I have made two tours in the Katun Range, way back in the film age, and there are still many other beautiful places left to see in these mountains. Tianshan - Terskei Alatau.

For a long time the native people have been coming to this place in summer to feed their reindeer herds. The so-called chum still serves as a traditional shelter. Due to the absence of trees in the area the firewood has to be brought from lower places. The big herds count up to a thousand reindeers. They give meat and milk, and some are used as draught animals for the wooden sledges. The reindeers are nearly as tame as any domestic animals. What a strange name! This glacier lives not far from Khobe Pass.

On our way to the Kodar mountains we visited the electrical power plant in Bratsk. The dam is 106 m high and creates a gigantic lake of 500 km length, covering 5470 sq. km of land with more than 48 cubic km of water. A maximum electrical power of 4,500 MW more than exeeds Lenin's parols upon electrification of the whole country.
