Biased and unprofessional reports on German books, translation issues and life in Berlin
love german books: July 2015
http://lovegermanbooks.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Biased and unprofessional reports on German books, translation issues and life in Berlin. Wednesday, 29 July 2015. Ralf Rothmann: Im Frühling sterben. A caveat to begin with: it has been a while since I finished reading Ralf Rothmann's latest novel, Im Frühling sterben. I wasn't sure what to write about it and so I didn't write anything. Now, though, I've noticed the book has stayed in my mind and I want to get it off my chest (where is it, then, mind or chest? Certainly somewhere I'd rather it wasn't).

Biased and unprofessional reports on German books, translation issues and life in Berlin. Friday, 30 January 2015. Anthea Bell Gets Cross. Our favourite translation heroine, the "grand dame" Anthea Bell, has been awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her great and lasting contribution to the promotion of German literature and services to translation. You can read the ambassador's speech here. And while you're at it you can also read a rather fabulous Guardian.

Biased and unprofessional reports on German books, translation issues and life in Berlin. Tuesday, 16 December 2014. I'm not sure but when I look Heike Geißler up on the internet I think I recognize her face. I certainly recognize her concerns, or the concerns she presents in her book Saisonarbeit. Heike Geißler is a writer and a translator and lives in Leipzig and has two children, and she also spent a short time working in the Amazon warehouse in Leipzig on a short-term contract. 8211; and Bettina Sule...

Kat's Book Shelf. Reviews, musings, and fangirl raving. Too many pies, not enough fingers…. Well, I went on holiday…and came back. As you do. I was a veritable reading champion and managed to make my way through no less than four books. Hurrah! I read the aforementioned In The Woods by Tana French, I Have Waited and You Have Come by Martine McDonagh; I also read The Gunslinger (Dark Tower #1). By Stephen King, and The Case of Mary Bell: a Portrait of a Child Who Murdered. Whom she met on many occasions).

Kat's Book Shelf. Reviews, musings, and fangirl raving. 8230;but what happened to July? It’s been a long while since I posted (June 19th, in fact), and for that, I apologise for being so lazy. Thing is, I didn’t really have any blog-able news, and I haven’t read anything particularly note-worthy (for shame! Today, my review. Of Girl Trouble: Panic and Progress in the History of Young Women. Carol Dyhouse) was published by LSE Review of Books. Check it out by following the ‘review’ link. August 22, 2014.

German literature, translation, teaching, research and occasional thoughts about Berlin. Book chapters and journal articles. Conference and seminar papers. Newer posts →. What affects the way we read books? Thinking about authors, gender and translations. In my last post. Could we even consider it to be a different novel? Cover images aren’t the only thing to affect how we read books though; extra-textual (or real-life) information also has a bearing on how we approach narratives. One of my (ma...There h...

Once again, I try to keep track of films I've seen, books I've read, and other bits of 'culture'. Saturday, June 8, 2013. Voice of the Fire by Alan Moore - a review in episodes . . . I downloaded this after visiting Thomas Tresham's unfinished summer lodge, Lyveden New Bield. By Alan Garner, which I love. June 9th: I'm still struggling through this bit, and not sure how much of the story I'm following. Keep skipping pieces and getting annoyed with the syntax. I think I shall not return to read the book.

Biased and unprofessional reports on German books, translation issues and life in Berlin. Sunday, 18 March 2018. At the Quarterly Conversation. Among other very interesting things, she addresses this issue, asking:. Why is it that anyone who dares write a negative review of a popular translation becomes a target? This is a problem. Or is it? Should we only positively review translations so that we lift the boat of translations in general? This, it seems, is less clear. Preserving a sense of place/period.
