Our first snow came yesterday. the white crystals fell, dancing in the air with yellow and orange leaves before melting as they touched the ground. it was cold and windy, but beautiful. in the evening the clouds started clearing, making it even colder, and the wind was singing outside. Thursday, August 22, 2013. Baby chickens and a nest ramp. Favorite chicken has been sitting on eggs, and hatched her first chick! Now we have to figure out how to help them get down from the nest boxes. Magic baby chicken ramp. it only took them a few days to learn how to use it, too! They are super cute. in the mean time, we came down every day at dusk, picked up mama chicken and each of her fluffy babies, and put them back up in the nest box. More eggs to go! We'll see how many babies we get. The shed ...

Friday, November 29, 2013. Hand made, wool stuffed headboard. Oh, luxury of luxuries. a headboard! Last winter i hung tapestries - and even a tarp - over the walls around the bed because the walls themselves were simply mud and straw. which is not very pleasant to lean against, and sheds debris very easily as soon as it's touched. I've been trying to teach myself these past few years that comfort is an okay thing, and that rest is not despicable. so say it with me - "yes, it's great to be comfy! Those of...

http://joanjr.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Saturday, June 21, 2014. My friend and neighbor kim and i shared a booth at the quincy herb fair for the second year in a row. we had a blast, met some lovely people, and made a bit of money. i was very proud of our booth and the lovely products we were able to put out. this included some incredible, local-clay pottery made by a friend of ours. I made a lot of candles. Links to this post. Wednesday, June 11, 2014. Her fleece (this half of it, anyway) even looks sheep-shaped. Links to this post. Jon built...

Thursday, June 5, 2014. Shaving horse and shearing sheep. Jon built a shaving horse recently, and i caught him messing around making some feather sticks. they're pretty helpful bits of kindling for starting fires. The World Is As You Dream It: More SOULCRAFT...

http://weaveyourdream.blogspot.com/2010/02/more-soulcraft.html

The World Is As You Dream It. Thursday, February 25, 2010. Here is some more excellent material from the book SOULCRAFT by Bill Plotkin. Much food for thought. All other addictions in the West can be seen as components of this larger one. If we are born to continue, then it is. A dog-eat-dog world, there is. No deeper meaning, no human soul, and creation is just a huge, dumb joke. That's a conclusion you wouldn't want to live with every day; better to distract and deaden yourself with addictions. This wa...

Wednesday, April 30, 2014. Went to texas to pick up my guy after he sold his farm, and made a 'local' basket while i was there - with youpon, grapevine, and honeysuckle vine. it smelled lovely for a few days! The chickens were curious about it, of course. Links to this post. Saturday, April 19, 2014. Raucous animals and spring babies. Fred apparently farts rainbows. Monday, July 15, 2013. Made cheese recently - super delicious, raw, full of tasty herbs, and highly spreadable. yum. Critters wait impatiently for the whey to cool, since they usually get it as a tasty treat. If you haven't made your own raw cheese before, it's super easy -. Heat some milk slowly on the stove, stirring occasionally so it doesn't burn to the bottom. SLOWLY, SO SLOWLY stir the catalyst into all the milk. Mix in salt, herbs, whatever as the whey drains out of your curds. Links to this post.

Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Viking tent paddock shelter. So the paddock shelter has been up since the winter solstice (just in time! Though this is the first picture i've taken of it since it's been more finished. it still needs fancying up and finishing touches, but the critters have been in there and cozy regardless. here's a picture from a little ways away in case you've been as excited as i was to see this thing done. http://joanjr.blogspot.com/2014/05/long-may-then-babies.html

Saturday, May 31, 2014. Long may, then babies. I may still end up with a bum finger. maybe i'll become a superhero who is always pointing dramatically at things. or maybe i'll just take solomon seal for months and eventually my tendons will heal up. only time will tell. In the meantime, jon has been doing the heavy farm work while i recuperate and i've been anxiously awaiting babies. our rex/angora cross babies are weaned and one has gone off to a new home. here's what the others look like now. Loving Language – Learning languages and connecting with others.

Learning languages and connecting with others. January 5, 2017. January 4, 2017. See you in a while! It has been a great year in 2016. I’ve been able to write more about the motivations for learning languages and have successfully stirred up some controversy. My goal has been to highlight privilege. Among language learners and to shine light on those who speak less-commonly studied languages. For example, here is my most controversial post from 2016: Language hacking language love. See you in a few weeks!
