Evidence Based EFL: woo watch: ELGazette

http://malingual.blogspot.com/2015/08/woo-watch-elgazette.html

Dedicated to looking at language and language teaching from an evidence-based viewpoint. Sunday, 9 August 2015. Is a great little publication. It exposes dodgy goings-on. In the ELT world, commissions interesting articles and most importantly pays a really decent rate to its writers. I know this because they asked me to write an article last year which appeared in print a few months ago. So it's a shame to see them featured in 'woo watch'. What have they done to end up here? For over two years (no joke).

I happened to hear a discussion on authenticity with guest Richard Pinner. I don't know Richard but I liked what he had to say. I asked him if he'd consider doing a guest post and he agreed! October 2, 2014. This post looks at a chapter entitled ‘Agency in the classroom’ written by Leo van Lier published in. Sociocultural theory and the teaching of second languages. At its core then, agency is, and here van Lier quotes Ahern, “the socioculturally mediated capacity to act” (p.163). How then do we define sociocultural mediation? Rather than something the learners. 1 involves initiative or self-regulation by the learner (or group). Van Lier advocates the analysis of many other traits evident in...

The Little Emperor Strikes Back. I have spent this term trying to establish an approach to language learning that will allow students to feel that they have some control over their progress. Learning a language, it seems to me, is easiest when you know Sweet Fanny Adams. At this point in your career, everything is new and not a day goes by (. Starting in the top left hand corner and working her way methodically to the bottom right hand corner. Did I feel that she hampered my learning? No How could she?

The Little Emperor Strikes Back. Having an aim is the key to achieving your best – Kaiser Hal. I’ve been doing some lesson observations recently. I’m not a big fan of this sort of thing – they confuse the developmental with the authoritarian and they lead to teachers and managers getting more wound up than they should be, given that it is.
